Jun’ai Byfield returned after several months out, making his first appearance of the season as Tottenham’s Under-21s faced Cheltenham Town in Tuesday’s EFL Trophy match.
Wayne Burnett’s Tottenham Under-21s drew 2-2 at Cheltenham before losing 7-6 on penalties in the EFL Trophy. George Miller put the hosts ahead in first-half stoppage time, but Richarlison equalised after 56 minutes, finishing James Rowswell’s cross.
Miracle Adewole then gave Spurs the lead with an individual effort after 73 minutes. Cheltenham’s Miller scored again deep into second-half stoppage time to force a shootout. Sam Archer saved two penalties, but Cheltenham secured the extra point.
Spurs now need Oxford to beat Cheltenham before defeating Oxford themselves to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.
Coming on after 70 minutes against Cheltenham. He played 20 minutes and received a 6.3 rating via FotMob. The centre-back had 22 touches, completed 15 of 17 (88%) passes, produced 1 block, 3 clearances and 3 recoveries.
Byfield joined Tottenham at age eight, initially playing as a striker before moving into defence at Under-11 level. He debuted for Spurs’ Under-18s aged 15 and captained their Under-17 Premier League Cup-winning team in 2025.
He signed his first professional contract that December, then made his senior debut against Borussia Dortmund in January 2026. Byfield made three first-team appearances during 2025/26 and has represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 levels during his development to date.
Jun’ai Byfield’s progress was interrupted by a back injury after his first-team breakthrough in early 2026. He had appeared against Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League before making his Premier League debut against Manchester City.
He made further squad selections before his season ended prematurely. Although the precise diagnosis and circumstances were not officially disclosed, the centre-back told me during Tottenham Under-21’s defeat to Brighton Under-21s at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that a back injury was keeping him out.
Before the setback, then Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Thomas Frank praised his composure and training performances, prompting further calls from fans to see the young academy graduate given more first-team opportunities.
Byfield will now hope that this injury setback is behind him and that opportunities to return to the first-team squad aren’t too far away.
Tottenham Under-21s face Leicester City Under-21s in Premier League 2 on Sunday, 18 October. Byfield could feature again for Wayne Burnett’s side if he hasn’t joined the first-team squad in Marbella, though no reports suggest he has.
