Mateus Fernandes delivered his best performance in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt after his big summer move, as Roberto De Zerbi’s side claimed a significant 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder was at the heart of an excellent team display, helping Spurs control the contest and secure their first win at their London rivals' home since 2018. He was named Man of the Match after the win.

The result followed a first Premier League win of the season against Coventry City, with fans and players hoping it will catalyse their season.

Speaking to Tottenham’s official website after the Chelsea win, Fernandes reflected on the squad’s growing belief and the work behind their recent improvement. The Portuguese midfielder also discussed the importance of shifting the club's mentality as De Zerbi’s players look to build on a memorable afternoon in West London.

“Marbella was very important for us as a team,” he said. “I think it builds a very good relationship with everyone, with the staff, with the team, with the teammates. Now we're playing as a team. I think this is the change point for everybody. Now we keep going, and we believe more than ever in our squad.”

Fernandes joined Tottenham from West Ham United in July for a reported £85 million, a club-record fee at the time. His performances during West Ham’s 2025/26 campaign had attracted interest from several leading clubs, despite the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League. Manchester United pushed to sign the Portugal international, while Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid were also linked with the midfielder.

The Portuguese Under-21 captain said conversations with Roberto De Zerbi played a key role in his decision to move to north London. The midfielder made 36 Premier League appearances for West Ham, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

Tottenham produced an assured performance to beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Roberto De Zerbi’s side controlled much of the contest but had to wait until the 77th minute for the breakthrough, when Mateus Fernandes’ corner led to a Mike Penders own goal. Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was subsequently sent off before Mathys Tel sealed the win with a solo effort. It was Spurs’ second Premier League win in a row.

“It's a battle, a derby so you need to fight for every ball, every minute,” added Mateus. “We know that Tottenham don't have a lot of victories in this stadium. So, we wanted to change this mentality around the club, around the fans. We want to fight for big things, for titles.

Tottenham’s back-to-back Premier League victories over Coventry City and Chelsea have given Roberto De Zerbi’s side a platform to build on after a difficult start to the season.

Spurs now face Crystal Palace at home on 31 October before travelling to Leeds United on 7 November. Following the international break, they host Ipswich Town on 21 November and visit Sunderland on 29 November.

Each fixture offers a chance to maintain momentum and build on the belief generated by their Stamford Bridge performance. If Tottenham can turn those opportunities into a sustained run of victories, they could climb the Premier League table.

“This is our challenge, so we keep going, keep going, keep going, working hard, believing in everyone in the club and doing the right things.”
