Tottenham reportedly step up their interest in Espanyol striker Roberto Fernández as De Zerbi considers strengthening his attacking options.
Tottenham have reportedly upped their interest in Espanyol striker Roberto Fernández as they assess options to strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s attack ahead of the January transfer market.
According to TEAMtalk, Spurs have been impressed by the forward, whose early-season form has pushed him to the top of their attacking shortlist.
Fernández has scored six goals in his opening seven games this season and earned his first senior Spain appearance during the most recent international break. Chelsea and Brighton are also said to have monitored him, but early indications suggest interest in the Spanish international during the January window.
Tottenham have struggled in front of goal this season, with both Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush yet to provide the firepower Roberto De Zerbi was hoping for.
TEAMtalk suggests Fernández’s appeal lies in his ability to operate as a central focal point, with his physical qualities and direct running attracting attention. This also raises the possibility that recruiting a striker could allow Omar Marmoush to occupy a different attacking role.
The signing would slightly go against what we have seen from De Zerbi and Tottenham in the summer window; every player signed came from a Premier League rival, all with a large amount of experience. Signing a player from Europe isn’t uncommon for Spurs, but it might go against what the Italian is looking to build right now.
His public praise of both Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush will also raise further doubts about a potential January move for a forward;; both will obviously need to hit the ground running after the extensive international break, or further calls for a new number nine at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will only continue to grow.
Roberto Fernández was born in Puente Genil, Spain, on July 3, 2002. He developed at Málaga, progressed into senior football, then spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Barcelona Atlètic.
Returning to Málaga, he scored 20 goals during their successful 2023/24 promotion campaign, helping the club regain its place in Spain’s second division.
His performances earned a move to Portuguese side Braga in July 2024. Fernández returned to Spain in January 2025, joining Espanyol on loan with an option to buy. Espanyol made the transfer permanent that June. His career has taken him through Spanish youth and lower divisions, Portuguese football and La Liga, establishing a strong foundation for his subsequent emergence as a striker now attracting Premier League interest.
