Tottenham have been linked with South Korean striker Oh Hyeon-gyu as reports suggest Spurs could target another centre-forward during the January transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with South Korean international Oh Hyeon-gyu amid reports that Spurs could look to strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s attacking options during the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old striker, who currently plays for Turkish giants Beşiktaş, has emerged as a potential Tottenham target, according to reports that have received considerable attention in South Korea.
Korean outlet Sports Chosun has covered Tottenham’s reported interest, while Goal Korea has also reported on the possibility of Oh eventually moving to the Premier League.
Oh will already be familiar to British football followers following his spell with Celtic. The South Korean striker joined the Scottish champions from Suwon Samsung Bluewings in January 2023 and went on to win domestic honours in Glasgow.
However, his opportunities were not always consistent, and Oh eventually moved to Belgian football with Genk. The move proved important for his development, giving the striker regular experience and helping him establish himself in European football before he eventually continued his career with Beşiktaş.
Oh has also become a regular member of South Korea’s international setup. At 6ft 1in, he provides a physical presence in the middle while also offering the energy and pressing ability a modern centre-forward needs.
Those characteristics are among the reasons Korean reports have suggested he could potentially suit De Zerbi’s Tottenham system.
The Oh reports aren’t surprising given the wider conversations being had about how Tottenham are likely to enter back into the market in January, particularly for a centre forward.
Spurs have struggled to score in the opening weeks of the Premier League campaign, increasing scrutiny of the options available to De Zerbi. Tottenham failed to score in each of their opening four league matches, despite creating opportunities during periods of those games.
Reports have subsequently suggested that another centre-forward could feature prominently in Tottenham’s January thinking.
January remains months away and Tottenham’s plans could change significantly depending on performances, injuries and the development of their existing forwards. But the South Korean international represents an intriguing option.
Tottenham’s extraordinary connection with South Korean football was shaped by Son Heung-min’s decade in North London. The 25-year-old would arrive with previous experience of British football, European competition and international football.
Crucially, he is also approaching the years traditionally considered a striker’s prime rather than arriving purely as a developmental signing.
It's certainly a name to keep an eye on, but for now Tottenham need to hit the ground running after the international break, and Dominic Solanke will need to play a big part in that; otherwise, other names will emerge.
