Tottenham could reportedly target another striker in January as Roberto De Zerbi searches for solutions to Spurs’ attacking problems following a difficult Premier League start.

Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer business may not be finished for the new season, with reports suggesting the club could return to the market for another centre-forward when the January transfer window opens.

Spurs invested heavily in the summer as Roberto De Zerbi began reshaping the squad, but their difficult start to the Premier League campaign has already raised questions about whether they need further attacking reinforcements.

Finding the net has been Tottenham’s biggest concern. Spurs failed to score in each of their opening four Premier League matches, with a goalless draw against Everton extending their wait for a first league goal of the campaign.

It has been a worrying period for fans given the attacking resources assembled in north London, and the lack of decisiveness in front of goal inevitably increases attention on Tottenham’s January plans.

After spending so heavily to rebuild their squad, why would Spurs already be considering another forward?

De Zerbi’s football places enormous demands on his attacking players. His teams are expected to control possession, build patiently from deeper positions and create overloads before attacking when spaces become available.

The centre-forward therefore needs to provide more than finishing.

Movement, link-up play, pressing and the ability to create space for attacking midfielders and wide players can all become important. Tottenham have created chances during their difficult opening weeks but haven't converted enough.

Sandro Tonali recently highlighted precisely that problem while discussing Spurs’ start, suggesting the performances have contained positives despite the results.

Ultimately, however, Premier League matches are decided by goals rather than promising passages of possession.

One name now being associated with Tottenham is South Korean international Oh Hyeon-gyu.

Reports in South Korea suggest Spurs are interested in the Beşiktaş striker, who previously played for Celtic and Genk. Other names are almost certain to emerge between now and January.

Much will also depend upon Tottenham’s existing forwards.

Dominic Solanke, Omar Marmoush and potentially even Richarlison offer De Zerbi different attacking characteristics, so Spurs must decide whether their current problems stem from personnel, confidence, tactical adaptation, or simply an early-season failure to convert chances.

Buying another striker is unlikely to solve Tottenham’s problems automatically if the wider attacking structure is not connecting to the way De Zerbi wants to play.

Reports suggesting Spurs could explore January additions have also raised the possibility that departures may be necessary to create both financial and squad space. Tottenham’s recruitment department, lead currently by Johan Lange, will already be assessing all possible opportunities, but there is no guarantee the club ultimately signs another centre-forward.

A run of goals and improved results could completely alter the conversation.
