Savinho: The Transfer That Has Tottenham Fans Split.

After a season that threatened to end in complete disaster before Roberto De Zerbi's arrival to save Thomas Frank’s sinking ship, the club is now entering the summer transfer window with renewed optimism. The focus has shifted from survival to rebuilding, from damage limitation to ambition. And if you believe what the owners are saying, and I know there are very split opinions there as well, then the Lewis Family intend to invest in the club, it could be an action-packed summer.

Yet among all the transfer rumours currently circling around North London, one name is generating more debate than any other. Manchester City’s Savinho.

The Brazilian winger is reportedly one of Tottenham's top targets this summer, and while there is little disagreement about his talent, there is plenty of disagreement about whether Spurs should actually sign him. In many ways, the Savinho split perfectly sums up where Tottenham are as a football club.

On one side are supporters who see him as exactly the kind of signing Spurs need. On the other hand, his lack of playing time this season under Pep Guardiola is concerning; his output in the games he has played has been well below the expectations for a player with such a high ceiling, but the debate remains: Can Roberto De Zerbi help him reach his full potential?

At just 22 years old, Savinho possesses the sort of pace, creativity and technical quality that can change matches in an instant. He is excellent in one-on-one situations, comfortable on the left or right wing and capable of producing moments of magic that get fans off their feet. Tottenham have lacked a player this season that made the stadium rise once the ball is at their feet, Mohammad Kudus, James Maddison and Xavi Simons all have that ability but have either been handcuffed by Frank or Tudor's football, or, as in James Maddison’s case, missed most of the season.

Tottenham have spent too many years lacking genuine game-changers. Too often, attacks have looked predictable and overly reliant on a small number of players. A lack of squad planning has affected the club in its regression on the pitch, but the balance of the squad has also been completely lost. Savinho represents something different. He is the kind of footballer who can turn a game with a single moment of brilliance.

There comes the other side of the argument. The concern isn't necessarily about the player's potential.

It's about the price and his recent form at City. The Brazilian, who signed from Girona for 30m, was heavily linked with Tottenham last summer, in a move reportedly close to 70m. The player, by all accounts, wanted to come, but the move was blocked from City’s side. His signing would have replaced club legend Son Heung-min, as he left for MLS side LAFC. But Savio, signed a new deal in Manchester and then put in a disappointing 2 G/A season, fans in North London are now questioning if he is worth the 50m-70m or if other options are availble.

Reports suggest any deal could require Tottenham to spend a huge fee, potentially one of the biggest investments in the club's history. That has left many fans asking a difficult question: Is now really the time to spend that much money on a winger who is still lack to show his full potential?

After all, this is still a squad with huge weaknesses and balance issues, all of which need to be addressed this summer, on top of a number of players needing to be moved on to.

There are concerns at centre-back. Questions remain in midfield, as a ball-carrying progressive passer is desperatley need. Squad depth was exposed repeatedly throughout the last two seasons. Injuries continue to be a recurring issue and need to be addressed this offseason with the new leadership group.

Some fans also fear the club could be repeating mistakes of the past. Tottenham have often been accused of prioritising exciting potential over proven reliability. The current transfer window was supposed to signal a change in direction, with experienced names such as Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi all linked with moves to North London, with concerned fans thinking that Savinho doesn’t necessarily fit the new look scheme Roberto De Zerbi wants to bring to Spurs.

What makes this debate so fascinating is that both sides have valid points. Savinho knows the league; he has played with Xavi Simons in attack for PSV in Holland, a winner at City too. Few supporters doubt that Savinho could become a star under De Zerbi. Equally, few would argue that Tottenham's squad doesn't need another player with unproven potential at an age when potential should be shining through.

This is really a debate about Tottenham's identity and not just about one player's signing. Do Spurs continue investing in youth, potential and long-term upside? Or do they focus on experienced players who can help stabilise the club immediately? The answer seems to be a mixture of both, given the comment coming out of North London, and for me, Savinho has become the face of that argument.
