Harry Kane is closing in on a new Bayern Munich contract, but reports suggest Tottenham could retain matching rights in the agreement and keep a potential route back to Spurs open.

Harry Kane appears increasingly likely to extend his stay at Bayern Munich, but Tottenham Hotspur could still play a role in the England captain’s future if reports about his new contract prove correct.

Kane has publicly confirmed that negotiations with Bayern to extend his contract are progressing well, with the former Tottenham striker saying an announcement may not be far away.

The 33-year-old is entering the final months of the four-year agreement he signed when he left Spurs for Bayern in August 2023. Speaking while away with England, Kane confirmed discussions are ongoing and said he is happy in Munich. That would ordinarily appear to reduce the possibility of an emotional Tottenham return.

However, reports concerning the details of his proposed new Bayern contract have introduced an intriguing Spurs angle. According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Kane’s representatives and Bayern have been discussing contractual conditions that could preserve Tottenham’s matching rights should the striker eventually decide to return to the Premier League.

Matching rights would not automatically give Tottenham the power to bring Kane back to north London.

Instead, they could potentially give Spurs an opportunity to match an acceptable offer from another Premier League club if Kane decides he wants to return to England. The England Captain would still have significant control over his own future, and any agreement wouldn’t automatically mean he returns to North London.

The striker’s relationship with Spurs requires little explanation. Kane progressed through Tottenham’s academy before becoming one of the greatest players in the club’s history.

He scored a record 280 goals in 435 senior appearances, surpassing Jimmy Greaves to become Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer before eventually leaving for Germany.

Nothing in Kane’s latest comments suggests he's trying to engineer a return to Tottenham. The England captain has repeatedly spoken positively about life in Munich and his ambitions with Bayern.

His move has also delivered the major silverware that proved elusive during his Tottenham career. Kane has continued scoring at an extraordinary rate in Germany while competing regularly for the Bundesliga and Champions League. This form has the England Striker a favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.

The possibility of Kane finishing his career at Spurs has inevitably remained a subject of discussion since his departure. Spurs have failed to replace the striker in his move with Richarlison and Dominic Solanke, both tying but failing to fill his shoes.

For now, Bayern remain his club and a new agreement appears increasingly close between player and Bayern, But if Tottenham matching rights are retained in the final contract, Spurs supporters will know one thing.

The possibility of seeing Harry Kane in a Tottenham shirt again may not have been completely closed.
