This weekend, Tottenham Hotspur starts another Premier League campaign, and given what has happened in the past, it is by no means easy to predict.
In the first 34 opening matchdays of the Premier League, from the 1992/93 season to the 2025/26 season, Tottenham have a record of 14 wins, 9 draws, and 11 losses, scoring 42 goals and conceding 36.
A 41.2% win percentage, with the North London side escaping defeat in 67.6% of their Premier League opening matches since the league began in 1992.
Since the start of the 2013/14 season, Spurs have played 13 Premier League matches, recording 8 wins, 3 draws, and just 2 losses, giving them a win rate of 61.5% and an unbeaten percentage of 84.6%, which is remarkably high.
The only two losses in that period were against Manchester United, and importantly, before the opening game of the 2026/27 season against Brentford, Spurs have a five-game unbeaten run.

As a result, Spurs have a record of three wins and two draws, with 11 goals scored and only four conceded in the same period.
On reflection, these numbers look strong, but there is an away-day problem. In the past, Tottenham have generally been much stronger when starting a Premier League season at home. In their 11 home opening matches, Spurs have won six, drawn three, and lost only twice, giving them a winning percentage of 54.5%, scoring 17 goals while conceding only 8.
When the club is away, the figure decreases noticeably. In the 23 away opening-day matches, Tottenham have won just eight times, drawn six, and lost nine; their away win rate is only 34.8%, having scored 25 goals and conceded 28.
Brentford will be happy to know that Tottenham have not won an away opening-day match in the Premier League since 2018.

Tottenham’s record in its opening match also shows that those are mostly closely fought games, being more common than exciting goal feasts.
In 23 of their 34 opening matches, Spurs have scored, meaning they have failed to find the net in almost one-third of the games. Tottenham have scored three or more goals only on five occasions, and of the 34 opening matches, 20 had fewer than three goals in total.
The largest margin with which they have won on their first day of play is three has happened twice:
Tottenham 4-1 Southampton — 2022/23 Tottenham 3-0 Burnley — 2025/26
On the other hand, their most severe defeat was a 3-0 loss to Manchester United in 2011.
The biggest opening day win was quite some time ago; the 4-3 win against Sheffield Wednesday in 1994 remains their highest-scoring opening match in the Premier League, with seven goals and Jürgen Klinsmann performing his diving celebration.
Fans looking for some excitement on opening day might have to settle for narrower results. Tottenham’s most common individual results include:
0-1 defeats — five 1-0 victories — four 1-1 draws — four 0-0 draws — three 2-1 victories — three
In fact, over half of the 34 openers in the Premier League have either ended in a draw or been decided by a single goal.
The only previous occasion on which Tottenham and Brentford met at the start of a Premier League season was during 2023/24, and Ange Postecoglou's first competitive game in charge of Spurs ended in a 2-2 draw.
Although Tottenham's long-term figures for their opening game are fairly ordinary, their more recent record is by no means so.
Spurs have won eight out of 13 matches, suffered only two defeats, and have gone five seasons without losing an opening-game match away from home since 2015.
A well-publicised rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi is providing excitement in N17 and the Spurs fan base; however, Keith Andrew enters his second season as Brentford manager following a highly impressive debut. It’s looking like another closely fought opening day.
