Celtic have been handed some mixed transfer news, and it looks like they will have to show some real ambition to pull off a deal.
Celtic's opening game of the campaign might have ended in a win, but it also showed that some of the same problems still remain from last season.
Despite signing two strikers for a combined £17 million, the club still did not seem the best in front of goal as glorious chances went to waste.
And it also showcased that they need to add some more quality to their flanks as well. In that regard, there is some mixed news for the Hoops.
According to Sky Sports, Frosinone have rejected an £8 million bid from Rangers for Fares Ghedjemis. It is days after Celtic had an offer of £6 million turned down.
Why this is mixed news for Celtic
On the surface of it, that is good news for Celtic. Their Glasgow rivals have failed with a bid and they are still in with a chance to sign the winger. That being said, how realistic are their own chances of pulling off a deal.
Sky Sports go on to claim that the Italian club are reluctant to part ways with the Algeria international this summer, unless they receive an offer of around €15-20 million (£13-17m).
Of course, that would be a record deal for Celtic. They have already broken it once this summer with the signing of Kasper Hogh but his display on debut against Dundee FC has already led some fans to question the investment.
It goes without saying that it is far too early to make any judgments on Hogh. That being said, he did not look like the most clinical striker, missing a few easy chances while Camilo Duran, who looked very decent in pre-season, had to be shifted to the flank to accomodate him.
Celtic need someone as good as Ghedjemis
If Celtic end up signing Ghedjemis from Frosinone, it would be on that right flank that he would be playing. In that situation, it would be interesting to see whether Duran or Hogh starts up front.
As for Ghedjemis, some of the numbers that he has put up in Serie B are staggering. He was arguably the best player in the league last season and earned them promotion.
As a result, though, Frosinone are in a position where they can hold on to Ghedjemis unless they get an offer they cannot turn down.
If Celtic want to sign him this summer, they will need to show some real ambition. Will they do that? Or will they be more comfortable with focusing on a move for Haissam Hassan, who has a €12 million release clause in his contract with Real Oviedo and might be available for a smaller fee.
