It has emerged that the English club have agreed to sign the Celtic coach.
The coaching situation at Celtic has been a topic of heavy discussion in recent weeks. Martin O'Neill has been confirmed as the permanent manager of the club after guiding them to a Premiership and Scottish Cup double while in an interim role.
That was the right step. But what has been unexpected is the fact that the coaching team does not seem to be in place.
There have been rumours that the club have offered Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham lower wages to continue in their roles. If that information is accurate, it is not a good look, especially after the job those two did when it came to salvaging the season.
O'Neill was happy to admit how often he relied on his coaching team, especially when it came to the tactical side of things.
It is not just Maloney and Fotheringham who face an uncertain future. It looks like another Celtic coach could be on his way out and has already agreed upon his next destination.
According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, West Bromwich Albion have agreed a deal for Gavin Strachan to join their coaching staff from Celtic. A deal is now in place for him to move to The Hawthorns.
Strachan has been at Celtic since 2020. And while he has faced criticism from fans in the past.
I have covered Celtic for nearly a decade now and it would be safe to say that he was not rated highly by the supporters at all, especially after the 20/21 campaign.
The perception around Strachan has changed a lot since then. There is no denying that he is an important part of the coaching structure of the club.
John Kennedy left alongside Brendan Rodgers. If Strachan leaves this summer as well, there won't be much in the name of continuing when it comes to the coaching unit.
It should worry the supporters about the situation of the club as well, if long-term coaches are open to leaving secure jobs at such a frequent rate. There has to be something that is convincing them that a move away is the right step in their careers rather than staying on at Celtic Park.
At this point, one can only hope that the club manage to find agreements with Maloney and Fotheringham.
If that does not happen though, it would not come as a surprise to anybody, to be very honest.
In football, there are a lot of working parts behind the scenes that can make or break a season. And expecting O'Neill to improve this side with a completely fresh coaching team would make it unnecessarily difficult for the 74-year-old manager.
