Celtic are believed to be close to reaching an agreement over a €4 million signing.
Celtic bounced back from their Champions League disappointment with a 2-1 win over Falkirk this weekend. A brace from Camilo Duran proved to be the difference between the two teams.
Obviously, it is not enough to make the fans forget about what happened against LASK, as the club surrendered a four-goal advantage with less than an hour to play.
A few quality signings might go a long way in lifting the mood of the supporters. And it looks like one is quite close.
Celtic close to agreement over signing Dutch midfielder
According to ED (via Voetbal Primeur), Celtic and PSV are indeed heading towards an agreement over the transfer of Joel van den Berg, now that the Scottish club are willing to pay around €4 million for the midfielder.
Of course, Van den Berg is not a name that has been linked with Celtic for a long time. So, this deal seems to have advanced quite quickly.
That goes to show that the Hoops can move swiftly when they need to. Unfortunately, it should have been done with their other targets before the Champions League play-off rounds.
In fact, Van den Berg feels like someone who is now wanted due to the club's failure to make it into the main phase of the Champions League once again following that collapse in Austria in the second leg.
Van den Berg is not the signing fans would have hoped for
Van den Berg has played just eight games of senior football in his career so far. It is safe to say that he is not the kind of player you would expect to come in and make an immediate impact at Celtic.
This is just the club going back to their previous strategy of signing highly-rated youngsters, in hopes that a few of those work out in the long run and can be moved on for significant transfer profit.
That is not the profile the fans would have been hoping for though. They would have wanted someone who can help the team win now.
All things considered, Celtic might have managed to get weaker than they were last season. And that is a worrying though if you are a supporter of the Hoops.
All the positivity that had built up has been squeezed out following that 5-1 away defeat to LASK. And with no Champions League football to come, there is little hope that the club will make any significant additions between now and the end of the window.
