Celtic have been tipped to accept an offer for the player amid links with Everton.

Celtic have lost a ton of quality since the departure of Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2023. And the club have never really managed to replace the level of talent that has left through the door.

At the same time though, that does not mean that Celtic should not be open to the idea of exits. It is about picking the right ones.

Unfortunately, that might mean saying goodbye to some more quality talents. Some tough decisions will need to be made though.

Time for Celtic to say a tough goodbye?

The player we are talking about is none other than Alistair Johnston. Without a doubt, he is one of Celtic's best players. But to show that on the pitch, he needs to remain fit.

That has rarely been the case with Johnston for quite some time now. He has been in and out of the squad due to a series of injury problems that has stretched for the last few seasons.

Earlier in the summer, there was talk of Everton being interested in signing Johnston. In fact, it is believed that the club even turned down an offer for the 28-year-old full-back.

But only a few months on, it has been suggested that the time has come for Celtic to consider the idea of the Canadian international leaving.

As a report from Football Insider goes on to read: "He has dealt with persistent injury troubles over the years at Parkhead, and this season has been no different. The Canadian right-back has barely featured since the start of this campaign, and Celtic should be open to letting him leave soon after recent developments."

Does it make sense for Celtic to let Alistair Johnston leave?

Of course, there is also going to be another camp, that thinks that letting go of Johnston does not make much sense under the current circumstances.

How much would Celtic get for the departure of Johnston? That is the big question when you talk about the possibility of the Canadian international leaving the club this summer.

Johnston is 28 years of age. You rarely get a top transfer fee for a player approaching his 30s. Just look at Daizen Maeda, who had actually enjoyed a tremendous couple of seasons before his departure.

It is hard to imagine Johnston would command a fee anywhere near that. Yes, he does have that Canadian national team pedigree, but teams are not going to overlook his injury record, even if they make a move.

Everton were seemingly interested in the summer but it would be unsurprising if they had already moved on, having Johnston pick two injuries already this season.

So, would it make much sense for Celtic to part ways with a proven and experienced player like Johnston for a paltry transfer fee, which is the best they can hope for right now?
