Celtic have been tipped to make a U-turn regarding Martin O'Neill that will divide the club's fanbase.
Celtic are coming off a decent weekend of results. They won, albeit narrowly once again against Dundee FC. A late goal from Kelechi Iheanacho proved to be the difference. With Hearts dropping points, the Hoops are now just three behind the league leaders and two adrift of the Rangers.
Of course, this season has been far from ideal. Considering how poor the Rangers have been, Celtic should have been running away with this league title race. But unfortunately, the Hoops have not been any better. And with just six games to go, this is anybody's Premiership to win.
Martin O'Neill does deserve credit. When he had arrived the first time around, Celtic were eight points behind Hearts. And then, he was brought back for a second time after Wilfried Nancy lost six of his eight games in charge of the club.
So, considering the circumstances, with a squad with injuries and a lack of overall quality, O'Neill has done a tremendous job keeping Celtic within just three points of the top of the table with six games to go.
O'Neill is expected to leave Celtic at the end of this season as his interim run comes to an end. He is 74 years old and has admitted on more than one occasion that management does take a toll on him these days.
That being said, Peter Grant seems to believe that O'Neill should be handed the Celtic job on a permanent basis.
According to 67 Hail Hail, Grant said: “Go and win us the league this season, if you possibly can, but then continue that into next season. That’s what I would have done.”
Such a move would divide the opinion of the fans. After how well O'Neill has done this season, with what is clearly not a good squad, many would be open to the idea of giving him another season in the job after a revamp in the summer.
On the other hand, there are those who recognise that O'Neill is not the answer in the long. He was practically retired from management before being brought back by Celtic after a six-year gap. And if they are going to undergo a squad overhaul, which they should be doing, then it should be someone with a long-term manager at the helm.
The club have been linked with quite a few interesting names in that regard over the last few months. The likes of Robbie Keane, Roberto Martinez, Jens Berthel Askou and a few others are believed to be in the mix to be the next permanent Celtic manager. But could the Hoops make a U-turn and go with O'Neill instead? It is unlikely. But never say never in football.
