Celtic have been tipped to sign the former Tottenham Hotspur player as a free agent this summer.

Celtic made a lot of signings towards the end of the summer transfer window. But was enough quality added to the squad, particularly in the middle of the park?

For a while, the club were constantly linked with midfielders like Niko Sigur, Ermin Mahmic and more. But that seemed to change immediately when the Hoops failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Even then, the Hoops continued to be linked with Gvidas Gineitis. But ultimately, even that move failed to materialise.

That pursuit is almost proof though that Martin O'Neill was keen to add another player in the middle of the park late in that window.

Has that need been fulfilled with the signing of Joel van den Berg from PSV and Oliver Sorensen on loan from Parma? Or are Celtic still short in midfield.

If it is the latter then Celtic might still have the chance to sign a top-quality midfielder, as he is available as a free agent.

Celtic tipped to sign ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder

As Robbie Walls wrote for Football FanCast: "It might then be worth looking to ex-Tottenham Hotspur man, Yves Bissouma, with reports last week indicating that Celtic were among the clubs interested in signing the 30-year-old free agent."

Reports did indeed emerge that Celtic were looking at Bissouma as a potential signing towards the end of the summer transfer window.

While no move was made, that does not mean that it is off the table because of the simple fact that Bissouma is without a club at the moment and can be signed at any point in time.

Why signing Bissouma might make sense for Celtic

Of course, the 25/26 season was not great for Bissouma. But was it for any of Tottenham Hotspur's players? Does not feel so, considering they finished 17th and avoided relegation on the final day of the campaign.

Also, let us not forget that at one point in time, he was considered one of the best midfielders in the entire Premier League.

And if even that is not enough to convince Celtic, Bissouma was also a favourite of a certain Ange Postecoglou. Of course, the Parkhead faithful will know all about the Australian's eye for talent.

At 30 years of age, Bissouma should still have a lot of football left in the tank. And it is curious why he has not found a club yet.

If Celtic do end up signing him, it could solve a lot of their issues. They might be a little short on quality in midfield right now, having allowed both Arne Engels and Reo Hatate to leave in the summer window.

Someone like Bissouma would fill that void for sure. But then again, is a move even financially viable? Perhaps, if the midfield does not have any plausible destinations in sight.
