Chris Sutton has slammed the Celtic player for lacking courage with his play against the Rangers.

It would be an understatement to say that Celtic were disappointing against the Rangers. Even away at Ibrox, the fans would have fancied the Hoops' chances.

After all, this is a Rangers team that got knocked out of both the Europa League and Conference League qualifiers under Derek McInnes and are not even in Europe this season.

For all of Celtic's own problems in European qualifiers, that is not the kind of Rangers side you expect to beat the Hoops 3-0. And yet, that is exactly what transpired at Ibrox at the weekend.

A lot of players have been criticised in the aftermath. But one in particular has drawn more criticism than pretty much everyone else.

Chris Sutton calls out Kasper Hogh for lacking courage with his play vs Rangers

Going into the game against the Rangers, a good portion of the fanbase would have preferred to see Kasper Hogh on the bench rather than in the starting XI.

But Martin O'Neill decided to start the striker, who was signed by Celtic in a club-record deal in the summer.

So far, it has not looked like a good investment though. Hogh has scored in only one game he has played for Celtic. And that did not change against the Rangers.

Chris Sutton is one of the pundits who felt that Hogh should not have started at Ibrox. And after the result, the former Celtic striker said on the Record Celtic Podcast (via Celtic Shorts):

“I think he’s very loose. He’s not clean with his hold-up play. That’s something that he has to develop and, at times, when your team is under the cosh, your team is struggling, you need your centre forward to have a bit of variation in the play and stretch the opposition back line.

“But when the ball does come into you, you really need to make it stick.

“I was on the end of plenty of criticism from Martin for playing one touch if it doesn’t get to my team-mate and he did it, I can think of, three or four occasions [against Rangers] where I was thinking: He’s in for a roasting here because he’s got to take that in.

“In many ways, it just lacks a bit of courage to flick things. Get your body in, take a touch, take a hit, get your team up the pitch and you have to trust yourself in those situations. Back in, scrap, read the flight of the ball and draw free kicks."

Obviously, Sutton knows a thing or two about what it takes to play as a big man forward for O'Neill, having enjoyed so much success working together during the Northern Irishman's original stint at Celtic.

Duran should be the number 9 vs Rangers at Parkhead

There is another Glasgow Derby around the corner as the two teams will meet again at Parkhead this coming weekend.

This time around, O'Neill will need to ring in the changes. He simply cannot afford to repeat the same setup that resulted in a 3-0 defeat last weekend.

Dropping Hogh to the bench has to be given serious consideration. Celtic have looked a lot more capable going forward, when it is Camilo Duran playing as the number 9.

Hogh has struggled to perform since arriving. On the other hand, in order to accommodate him in the starting XI, Duran has to shift to the right, which takes away some of his goal threat as well. So, this is not suiting anybody.
