Chris Sutton has made a Celtic claim that could leave the fans worried about the future.
The international break is well and truly in full swing. Going into it, there was a ton of talk that this period of no club football could spell the end for Martin O'Neill at Celtic Park.
After all, Celtic went into it on the back of three straight losses. Two of them were at the hands of the Rangers. They also lost their Europa League opener against Ferencvaros in between the two Glasgow derbies.
Celtic is a club where even one loss can be deemed a crisis. Naturally, questions were raised about Martin O'Neill and his suitability for the job.
O'Neill had done a tremendous job last season but has struggled to get a tune out of his team this time around. They have looked especially shaky following their defeat at the hands of LASK. That result appears to have shattered a lot of players' confidence.
Could Martin O'Neill leave Celtic?
So, could a fresh start under a new manager work? Or is O'Neill still the answer? Celtic do not seem keen on making a change. But it might not even be up to them.
O'Neill might choose to walk away in order to protect his legacy and also because there are some question marks over his health as well, at 74 years of age.
Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club (via Celtic Shorts): “I’m just concerned about him.
“He had an operation not so long back. He hasn’t looked particularly well.
“The stress he has been under – you think about what he did last season, going back once, then going back again, getting Celtic over the line, all that drama.
“Getting the job in the summer, I didn’t necessarily want him to take it, because that was like a perfect finish.
“I hated seeing him doing the press conference [post-match on Sunday]. He looks tired. He offered that comment [on considering his future]. That doesn’t bode well.
“A lot of the age stuff has been thrown at him, and I wonder if it’s all a bit too much.
“He’s clearly thinking about pulling the plug on it, which many of the players, based on Carter-Vickers’ comments, may want. I thought that was disgraceful, what he said.”
It is hard to argue with anything that Sutton has said. But if O'Neill does decide that he has had enough of managing Celtic for a secon time, where would the club go from there?
Who could be the next Celtic manager if O'Neill leaves?
So far, all of the names in the media are those who have been linked with Celtic in the past or have a well-established history with the Hoops.
Neil Lennon has been tipped by some for a third run. But to be honest, after how the previous one ended, it is almost impossible. It won't satisfy the fans.
Scott Brown has been suggested as a potential interim option as well. Broony is an icon of the club, but as a manager, he has not shown nearly enough to suggest he is ready for a job of this magnitude.
Then there are names like Kieran McKenna, Robbie Keane and Craig Bellamy. Those links feel like someone just took a look at the names from the past and just republished them.
Celtic will know how difficult it is to get a managerial change right in the middle of the season. We all know how things turned out for Wilfried Nancy last season. The Hoops simply cannot risk a repeat.
