Celtic fans won't be happy about the real reason the club failed to sign Elias Filet this summer.

It is no secret that Celtic need to add to their ranks up top. And it had looked like they had Elias Filet on their radar this summer. A move seemed very achievable for the Frenchman who had scored 22 times last season.

One mistake Celtic have previously made is signing strikers who are not amongst the goals before arriving. Unsurprisingly, they end up struggling at Parkhead as well. Two great recent examples are Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu, brought in on loan in the winter after poor first halves of the season at their respective teams. That was not going to be a problem with Filet.

Yet, he is set to head to Belgium instead of joining Celtic. But why did the Hoops fail in their quest to sign him?

Well, the club's recruitment team is not popular with the fans already. And this saga might have given the supporters another reason to have that view.

According to CeltsAreHere, Celtic had held discussions with the Filet's agent. However, the process did not move fast enough for Filet, nor for his representatives.

Filet wanted to move to a new club in time to start and undergo a full pre-season. The striker had been interested in a potential move to Celtic.

So, it looks like Celtic stalled on the move and missed out on someone who could have been a decent addition to the team.

Now, do not get me wrong, there were going to be doubts around the move if it had been completed. Yes, Filet scored 22 goals last season. But he was playing in the Swiss second division.

Would that translate to a club like Celtic? Could he deal with the pressure of playing for a team where the expectation is to win every domestic game?

At the very least, he could have been a rotational option. And for a €600k transfer fee, there was not much risk involved for Celtic either.

So, the Hoops have missed out on a decent opportunity here, just by not moving quickly enough. One can only wonder how many more times we will say that this summer.

This is not a case in isolation. Celtic have allowed things to drag on for far too long in the past as well. So, when players have other options, they can easily afford to look elsewhere. Just think of how often that appeared to happen in the previous summer transfer window as well? Some lessons might not have been learned.
