The 55-year-old has emerged as the early favourite to replace Martin O'Neill as Celtic manager.

Will Martin O'Neill be the Celtic manager come the end of this international window? Even a week ago, not many would have expected this to be a topic of discussion.

There have been plenty of suggestions in recent days though that O'Neill leaving is not outside the realm of possibility.

Firstly, the team is struggling badly for results. They have lost three games in a row. Two of them have been Glasgow Derbies, and Celtic did not score in either one.

Then there is the legacy angle. O'Neill might be keen to preserve that rather than stick around if he feels he is not capable of turning things around. That would only hurt his image in the eyes of the fanbase, similar to what happened to Neil Lennon in that 20/21 campaign.

Early favourite named to replace Martin O'Neill as Celtic manager

Speaking of Lennon, it looks like a third run as Celtic manager could potentially be on the cards for the Northern Irishman, in case O'Neill does end up leaving.

According to Football Insider, Lennon is the early favourite to take over the Celtic job from O'Neill in the coming weeks.

Of course, Lennon would be the familiar choice. That being said, it is hard to imagine that most fans would be happy if Lennon did end up getting the Celtic job for a third time, especially after how his previous run had ended.

Some of the other names that have been named as potential replacements are Shaun Maloney, who is part of O'Neill's coaching staff already, Scott Brown and Roy Keane.

O'Neill remains Celtic manager for now

It had been suggested that Celtic were ready to stick with O'Neill for the time being, even after the second defeat to the Rangers at the weekend.

At the same time, it might all come down to O'Neill and what he wants to do. He is 74 years of age and might already be having second thoughts about continuing in the role for the entirety of the season.

But for now, there is no reason to believe that it is definitely going to happen. O'Neill remains the manager for now.

The focus has to be on turning things around after the international break. That would be the best-case scenario for Celtic rather than taking a risk on changing managers in the middle of the campaign, as we saw with Wilfried Nancy last season.
