There is some good news for Celtic as the player has made a return to training from injury.
There has been very little positive to speak of at Celtic in recent months. Since that 5-1 defeat against LASK in the Champions League qualifier play-off tie, it has been one stumble after another for Martin O'Neill's side.
Obviously, failing to make the Champions League ended up having an effect on the club's transfer plans for the remainder of the window.
As always, they had left things undone until they ensured that Champions League football was secured. When that did not happen, the club seemed to quickly shift their transfer targets.
After weeks of being linked with first-team-ready players, they ended up signing youngsters instead, with quite a few of them arriving only on a loan basis. And the few permanent additions they made were no headline grabbers.
Celtic player returns to training from injury
Joel van den Berg was one of the players Celtic signed late in the window. For most of the window, there had been no mention of the club having interest in the Dutch midfielder, but they quickly got a deal done once they failed to make the Champions League.
It is worth pointing out that Van den Berg has not even made his debut for Celtic. So, both the player and the club should look to get it out of the way as soon as possible.
Of course, it is worth pointing out that he was seen in a moon boot recently, which suggests he might have picked up an injury in training. There is some positive news in that regard.
Van den Berg has now been spotted back in training with his teammates at Lennoxtown. It is still unclear though how close he is to match fitness.
Is Joel van den Berg the answer to Celtic's problems?
Van den Berg's return is good news for Celtic. They have been struggling in midfield for quite some time now.
Of course, it would be somewhat unrealistic to expect Van den Berg to be the solution for Celtic. He is 19 years of age and has played only six games of senior football.
That being said, in the past, we have seen fellow Dutch players like Jeremie Frimpong do well for the club after being handed responsibility early in their careers. Fans should hope that Van den Berg proves to be of that mould.
In recent times, O'Neill has proven that he is open to giving opportunities to youngsters if they deserve it. So, a door might be open for Van den Berg.
