When asked about it after the Scottish Cup win, Martin O'Neill did not close the door on continuing on as Celtic manager. That being said, there was also a recognition from the man that he was not going to be a long-term solution or someone who could build a 'project' at 74 years of age.

Of course, a large section of the fanbase would like to see O'Neill continue as Celtic manager after guiding them to an unlikely double under the most difficult of circumstances. The manner in which the league was one might make it the sweetest for many.

And that is exactly why it feels like the perfect ending as well. O'Neill won two trophies in his final two games. He managed his last game against a Neil Lennon side.

How can it get better than this? Somebody might say winning a treble next season. And that is plausible. That being said, in terms of the emotional value of this league triumph, it might not be topped for a while to come.

The only thing that I could compare it to is Ange Postecoglou's debut season, when nobody had given Celtic a chance after the 20/21 campaign and they went on to prove the doubters wrong, turn around the title race in the second half of the season and get ahead of the Rangers, who were heavy favourites.

If O'Neill does leave this summer, the club will need to find a proper replacement. They cannot afford a repeat of the Wilfried Nancy situation.

Curiously, Robbie Keane, one of the names most heavily linked with the Celtic job, has quit his Ferencvaros job. The rumours had broken out recently and now, the man himself has made it official.

He posted a message to the Ferencvaros supporters on Instagram, which read: 

"After an incredibly enjoyable and successful 16 months at Ferencváros, I have made the difficult decision to bring my time at the football club to an end.

"From the beginning, the President, the Board, the staff, and the players made me feel welcome and were a pleasure to work with. Together, we formed a fantastic partnership that delivered great success for the club, and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved.

"The supporters at Ferencváros are among the most passionate in Europe, and the backing they have given me from the moment I arrived is something I will always remember and cherish.

"Winning the League in my first season, followed by lifting the Magyar Kupa last week, are moments I will always be immensely proud of. I will also never forget those unforgettable nights during our unbeaten run in the Europa League. These are achievements and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my career.

"After a great deal of thought and reflection, I believe now is the right time for me to move on. It is not a decision I have taken lightly.

"Ferencváros is a special football club, and I have no doubt it will continue to enjoy success in the years ahead.

"Thank you all for your incredible support and for the unforgettable memories we shared together. I wish the club and everyone connected to it nothing but the very best for the future."

The timing of Keane's exit will only add to the speculation that he is Celtic-bound this summer.

Of course, he has also been linked with the Slovan Bratislava job recently but that feels like a move in the sideways direction. Going to Celtic would be the step up that you would expect from him.

Obviously, not everybody is convinced that Keane would be the right man for the job. That being said, he has shown a lot of quality in his early years as manager.

He has won trophies at both clubs that he has been at so far. That is a good sign. That is the minimum expectation at Celtic, something that Nancy found out earlier in the season.

Keane has also played for top clubs over the course of his career, including a loan stint at Celtic. So, he will be under the pressure that comes with it and be well-equipped to deal with the situation.
