It looks like the Celtic announcement might not be far away after the latest update on the situation.
The 25/26 season ended on a high for Celtic. But that does not mean that everything is sunshine and rainbows for the club. Far from it. The Hoops might be staring at a monumental squad rebuild this summer.
Key players like Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Arne Engels and more could be on their way out. And they will need to be replaced.
It has been widely reported that the club have agreed a deal with Martin O'Neill to continue as manager, alongside his coaching staff, after the double.
It had looked like the club originally preferred a younger coach like Robbie Keane to take over the reins but after fan backlash, they had to step back and chose to continue with the 74-year-old Northern Irishman.
No official announcement has been made by the club yet. But it does look like one is not far away.
According to The Scottish Sun, O'Neill has been spotted at the Glasgow Airport and they posted a picture as well. The report goes on to read:
"SunSport spotted O’Neill at Glasgow Airport this morning in amongst Scotland fans who were leaving for North America to support the national team.
"O’Neill appeared in the departures area of the airport with his passport and boarding pass visible in hand."
Of course, the reason behind his presence and where he was headed is not clear. Some conspiracy theories have already arisen that O'Neill might not end up getting the job.
It feels a bit too early to come to such conclusions. It is more than likely that the appointment is set to be made official soon. It is even possible that he might have been in Glasgow to iron out the final details.
The fact of the matter is that we do not know the details behind O'Neill's trip to Glasgow. But one would have to imagine that it had something to do with the Celtic job.
Anyways, news does not break this widely unless there is some substance to it. If it was factual, it would have been officially rejected as false by the club already.
So, expect to see O'Neill in the Parkhead dugout from next season. And he is expected to be joined by the familiar faces of his coaching staff as well.
Obviously, just bringing in O'Neill would not automatically solve all of Celtic's problems. They need to put together a capable squad as well.
At the moment, it does look like some key players will be leaving. They will need to be replaced as soon as possible. And not just that, the Hoops board will need to find a way to strengthen beyond that.
Also, let us not forget that the business needs to be done in time. Celtic have missed out on multiple Champions League campaigns in the past, just because the club did not show enough ambition or urgency ahead of the qualifiers and then ended up losing.
