According to reports from the media in recent hours, Rangers have made a bid to sign a South American forward from the Portland Timbers over in MLS.
When it rains, it pours for Rangers at the moment. The team have gained just one point from their opening two Scottish Premiership games, and were dumped out of Europa League qualifying by Polish side Jagielliona, with a starting XI worth over 40 million less than the Rangers XI.
On top of the dismal form, there are a number of frustrating injuries to contend with, so much so that Derek McInnes had to play a 3 at the back system with wingers at wingers on Thursday evening.
There are the injuries to defenders Ben Godfrey and Tuur Rommens, as well as the brutal ACL injury suffered by forward Youssef Chermiti in the defeat at home to Hibernian last Sunday.
Well, it looks as if Rangers are finally trying to take action. A few hours ago, we aggregated the news that Scottish left-back James Penrice from Greek Champions, AEK Athens, to add a much needed option in that position.
There will be hope that the same can be said up front too. Indeed so, as high profile MLS journalist, Tom Bogert, has reported that Rangers have submitted a bid of 10 million dollars (just shy of £7.5 million) for Portland Timbers striker Kevin Kelsy.
He does mention that the Timbers are not looking to sell Kelsy, nor is the striker agitating for an exit, and that Rangers are not the only side tracking him. So there have been more positive transfer links, all being said.
In MLS so far this season (calendar year schedule), the striker has played 17 times, starting 12 of those, and scored nine goals, as well as providing two assists and creating four big chances. Pretty decent numbers, though how that would translate is another question. At 6'4, he would certainly bring a physical presence to the team.
Rangers know a thing or two about having a South American striker, with Alfredo Morelos one of the most polarising players in the club's modern history. Kelsy has only just turned 22 years old, so has plenty of room to grow and develop.
Truth be told, Ibrox isn't the place for someone to do that at the moment, but he doesn't need to know that, especially as he found would find out himself in no time. In all seriousness, this would be a great signing and a much needed statement of intent from the board. Let's wait and see what happens.
