According to reports in the media on Sunday afternoon (the 9th of August, 2026), Rangers have recently turned down a club record bid for forward player.
Although Rangers will kick off their first home game of the Derek McInnes era later on today against Hibernian at 16:00 BST, it won't be the only talking point of today.
Indeed not, as according to a report from Rangers Review, a club record £22m bid for forward Youssef Chermiti from Turkish side Galatasaray has been knocked back by Rangers, after an approach earlier on in the week.
They mention that it is "nowhere near" what the club would be looking to sell him for. Truth be told, it is hard to imagine the club getting a lot more than £22m, so until proven otherwise, we can likely assume that he will be staying put.
In his debut season at Ibrox last season, Chermiti scored 15 goals and provided a further five assists in 30 Scottish Premiership games, with just 20 of those being starts, and a total minutes equivalent of just under 22 full 90's worth of football. He finished his maiden season off in style, with a hat-trick and an assist in a 5-2 win away to Falkirk.
He did, however, fail to find the net in eight Europa League games, which perhaps suggests that he is not ready for an upwards move just yet. Easy to say, but another 12 months in Glasgow could be, and probably is the best thing for his development at the moment.
Well, in order for there to be another Europa League campaign for the club this forthcoming season, Rangers will need the Portuguese striker to be at his best on Thursday night, as McInnes's side look to overcome a 2-1 first leg deficit against Polish outfit Jagiellonia Bialystok.
Truth be told, it feels a little surprising that the club have turned down such an offer, if true. He is good, but not otherworldly good. And when you consider that Lawrence Shankland is the new captain of the club, and knows the manager very well, perhaps he will not even be a key player this season?
Let's be real, £22m could you get a few top players at this level, so the sensible thing could have been to cash in and reinvest the money. To try and look at it from the club's perspective, perhaps they see a lot of potential in a player who is still only 22, and feel one day they will get more money for him. Let's see.
