Former Philadelphia Union coach Bradley Carnell has backed Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya to continue progressing after his Ibrox move.

Following his impressive start at Ibrox, Olwethu Makhanya received praise from former Philadelphia Union coach Bradley Carnell. The South African coach, who gave Makhanya his MLS debut, believes that the defender has the qualities to keep improving in Scotland.

"He has shown he has the physical tools and the skill set to play at any level", Carnell told FARPost. Nevertheless, he also stressed the importance of humility and managing the demands that come with increasing attention.

The defender has made eight starts in the Scottish Premiership since his move to the Isles, which, for Carnell, demonstrates his ability to adjust to different challenges. The manager further spoke about life away from football and dealing with the media.

Makhanya joined Rangers from Philadelphia in July and has signed a four-year contract with an option to extend the deal for another season. The move was reported to be around £3m, an investment that is likely to pay dividends over the years.

The South African defender started his career at Stellenbosch before moving to North America in 2023. Makhanya was initially brought over to play for Philadelphia's second team, but his timely rise pushed him into the senior setup within two years.

The defender went on to debut for Philadelphia's first team in February 2025. He eventually made 53 appearances for the side across all competitions before moving to Scotland.

Makhanya was also part of South Africa's 2026 World Cup squad. Nevertheless, his performances have already brought recognition, as the centre-back won the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month for September.

Rangers won all five matches they played last month, including four league fixtures. Celtic were prime victims of the Gers' unbeatable run as they suffered two losses against McIness' side.

The Glasgow side first won 3-0 against the Bhoys, followed by a 1-0 league victory at Parkhead. McIness' side also kept four clean sheets across the five fixtures, further proving the defence's contribution to the run.

Makhanya stands as the best centre-back in the league when it comes to recoveries per 90, as he's averaged 6.38. Likewise, his xG against while on the pitch per 90 (1.06) puts him in the top 2.2% of centre-backs in the Scottish Premiership.

The success, however, hasn't come without the support of the people around him, Makhanya pointed out earlier this month. While at a press conference, he explained how his teammates and coaches have helped him settle in Scotland.

The centre-back's early success has been a good indicator of his potential. At just 22, it is clear that Makhanya still has a long way to go, and now, as he looks ahead, maintaining the same standards will be his priority.
