Club Brugge have reportedly contacted Rangers over Tuur Rommens, leaving the Ibrox club facing a fresh decision amid his injury lay-off.
Rangers defender Tuur Rommens has emerged as a reported target for Club Brugge, little more than seven months after completing his move to Ibrox.
Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that the Champions League club have contacted Rangers to ask about the 23-year-old and the possible terms of a deal.
No formal offer has been made, although their interest is described as genuine. Rommens joined the Light Blues from Westerlo on 14 January, signing an initial three-and-a-half-year contract.
Sky Sports reported the deal was worth more than £3m. The left-back has since made 14 appearances, scoring once and supplying three assists.
He had established himself as Derek McInnes’ first choice before suffering a groin strain during last weekend’s Premiership defeat to Hibernian.
McInnes has said Rangers expect Rommens to miss between four and eight weeks. That absence had already made another left-back a priority.
Likewise, the prospect of losing him permanently would leave the position requiring still greater attention.
James Penrice is close to providing the immediate cover, with the former Hearts defender having already completed his medical ahead of a season-long loan from AEK Athens, with an option to make the move permanent.
Club Brugge’s interest also arrived after Bjorn Meijer left for Sampdoria. Tavolieri suggested that a pursuit of Rommens could be connected to further uncertainty around Joaquin Seys, giving the Belgian champions an obvious reason to assess alternatives.
However, Rommens was bought for a significant fee only in January and remains under contract until 2029, leaving the Ibrox club under no pressure to sell.
Any proposal would therefore have to reflect both his immediate importance and his potential resale value.
A modest profit would do little to help McInnes while his squad remains short in several areas and European qualification is still to be secured.
That places a premium on certainty during a difficult opening month. However, there is an intriguing wider transfer backdrop.
Rangers have pursued Club Brugge right-back Hugo Siquet, while Brugge have also been linked with Jayden Meghoma, another left-back considered at Ibrox.
Those situations are separate at present, but the clubs now have several reasons to remain in contact.
Unless Club Brugge turn their enquiry into a persuasive bid, retaining Rommens and allowing Penrice to cover his recovery appears to be the better choice for Rangers.
However, with both clubs entangled in a web of transfer market interests, the Gers might come out stronger following some unconventional deals.
