Rangers have confirmed Nedim Bajrami has joined Al-Taawoun on loan, with the Saudi club holding an option to sign him permanently.
Rangers have confirmed that Nedim Bajrami has joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Taawoun on loan, bringing his two-season spell at Ibrox to an at least temporary end.
The Light Blues announced on Tuesday that the agreement includes an option for Al-Taawoun to make the midfielder’s move permanent next summer.
It is a significant development after reports initially described the Albania international’s departure as a permanent transfer.
Rangers’ official statement, on the other hand, makes it clear that Bajrami remains under contract to the Ibrox club for now.
The 27-year-old arrived from Sassuolo in August 2024 on a long-term deal, with Rangers keeping the fee undisclosed.
Bajrami appeared more than 60 times for the Gers during his time in Glasgow, scoring seven goals in the process.
The Swiss-born midfielder scored five of the seven goals during the 2024/25 season. However, inconsistent flashes weren't enough to get him enough minutes.
This led Bajrami to not secure a regular role under any manager at Rangers. Nevertheless, his debut campaign was still memorable.
Bajrami scored in the opening minutes against Malmo, helping the side defeat the side in the Europa League.
He also scored against Celtic in the League Cup final at Hampden Park. Despite his efforts, the 27-year-old couldn't establish himself as a starter at Ibrox.
Likewise, limited minutes and injury interruptions followed, which led to his further decline. The combination of multiple factors eventually prevented him from building momentum in Glasgow.
Regardless, the departure allows Derek McInnes to focus on the changing group and create space for required players.
The rebuild isn't over yet, with the Scottish manager still wanting to sign for multiple positions before the transfer window closes.
Likewise, the deal is mutually beneficial, with Bajrami getting his minutes and the option to push for a permanent move next summer if things go well in Saudi Arabia.
However, a permanent deal would've suited the Gers better, who are very active in the window.
Regardless, Bajrami has what it takes to succeed, as his performances on the international stage have not deteriorated.
The midfielder scored against Italy after only 23 seconds at Euro 2024, subsequently setting the record for the fastest goal in the tournament's history.
While that execution only appeared in flashes in Glasgow, both parties will be hoping for a consistent display in Saudi Arabia.
If not, he'll have to find another home next season, as his contract expires in 2028. The Light Blues, too, won't be keen on losing a player they reportedly paid ÂŁ3.4m for to leave on a free transfer.
