Thelo Aasgaard has joined Anderlecht on loan, with Rangers reportedly receiving £1m and the Belgian club holding a £5m option next summer.
Rangers have confirmed that Thelo Aasgaard has joined Anderlecht on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season. The Ibrox club announced the move Wednesday night and wished the Norwegian international well in Belgium.
It brings a swift conclusion to a transfer which developed rapidly during the closing stages of the Belgian window. BBC Sport Scotland report that Anderlecht have paid a £1m loan fee and possess a £5m option to sign Aasgaard permanently next summer.
The Ibrox club did not disclose the financial terms in their announcement, meaning those figures remain unconfirmed by the club. The structure provides the Gers with an immediate return while preserving the possibility of a permanent exit worth £6m in total.
However, because the clause is reported as an option rather than an obligation, the final outcome still depends on the Purple and White choosing to activate it. The arrangement would also leave Aasgaard’s Rangers contract intact if Anderlecht decide against converting the loan into a permanent transfer next summer.
Aasgaard moved to Ibrox from Luton Town in July 2025 and signed a contract running until 2029. The attacking midfielder made five appearances for Derek McInnes’ side this season and scored once.
He scored that goal on the opening day of the Scottish Premiership campaign, when he netted Rangers’ equaliser in a 1-1 draw away to Dundee United. Yet he subsequently slipped down the pecking order and was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s 2-1 victory at Falkirk.
For Aasgaard, regular minutes in Brussels offer a chance to rebuild momentum after his opportunities became limited in Glasgow. His versatility across midfield and the forward line should give Anderlecht several ways to use him during the campaign.
From a Rangers perspective, the agreement is also a piece of squad management. They have reportedly generated a seven-figure loan payment for a player no longer central to McInnes’ immediate plans, without forcing an immediate permanent sale this week.
The reported £5m option, combined with the loan payment, would return more than the £3.5m fee the Gers reportedly paid to recruit Aasgaard from Luton Town last summer. It would nonetheless only become bankable if Aasgaard convinces Anderlecht to keep him.
His performances in Belgium will therefore matter on both sides of the deal. The Light Blues have reportedly secured short-term income and opened a place in McInnes’ attacking group. However, their next concern will be whether this loan develops into the permanent sale envisaged within the package.
