Rangers have been linked with Motherwell left-back Emmanuel Longelo, but a subsequent report says there is no concrete Ibrox interest.
Despite being linked with Rangers, a late move for Motherwell left-back Emmanuel Longelo now seems unlikely following subsequent reporting. Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri previously claimed that Longelo was looking for a way out before the transfer window shut in September.
The journalist went on to suggest that the Gers were looking at the Englishman as a potential option on the left flank, with talks being a possibility. However, the Daily Record didn't see weight in these claims and later reported that the Light Blues weren't into the idea.
No bid or negotiations have been confirmed by either side, making it a very early-stage interest or even a possible misunderstanding. Born in an East London town, the Motherwell defender spent most of his career in England before moving North of the Isles.
A product of the West Ham United academy, Longelo was loaned out to Birmingham City in 2022, which later resulted in a permanent move. However, things didn't work out with the Blues either, so he was loaned out to Cambridge United.
Following 15 league appearances for the South-Eastern side, Motherwell signed him for an undisclosed fee. His deal runs till the end of the 2026-27 season, with an option to extend his stay for another campaign.
The journey has been contrasting for the Englishman in Scotland. He scored eight goals for the Steelman in the Scottish Premiership last season, including two in Motherwell's 3-2 victory at Ibrox in April.
While still without a goal in the league this season, Longelo has averaged 0.35 xA per 90, ranking in the 90.9th percentile of left-backs in the league. He's also averaged 2.18 successful dribbles per 90, which places him in the 93.9th percentile.
Likewise, he offers another route into the final third, stretching opponents through his direct running and aggressive presence on the flank. The 25-year-old is a comfortable ball carrier, and his numbers this season already look threatening.
With Tuur Rommens sidelined due to a groin injury, James Penrice has since arrived to replace the Belgian left-back. Penrice, however, is only at Ibrox on loan, and there remains a depth problem on that side of the flank.
Hence, Longelo can be a competition and insurance if something were to prevent Penrice from playing. The 25-year-old's contract situation also offers Rangers an opportunity. However, with rumours surrounding interest having cooled down, the Light Blues might not be focusing on the left flank during the remainder of the window.
