Senegal 5-0 Iraq: A Five Star Performance When it Was Needed Most

Senegal made the early running in this game, and nearly took a lead within the first three minutes, as Idrissa Gana Gueye's effort deflected just the wrong side of the post from their point of view. 

However, from the resulting corner they took the lead, as central defender Abdoulaye Seck header was flicked in by Habib Diarra. The fact the Senegal players all ran into the goal to get the ball shows they knew goal difference could be key.

Just a few minutes later, Iraq were reduced to ten men as Rebin Sulaka was sent off for a last man foul, after a VAR review. From the following free kick, the keeper made a great save to deny Sadio Mane. 

Truth be told, considering the man advantage, Senegal were not actually playing very well, and goalkeeper Mory Diaw very nearly gave a goal away having been caught on the ball in his own box.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Mane again went close but his curling effort was just off target, with Pape Thiaw's side desperate to try and improve their goal difference. That would be that for the first half. 

Five minutes into the second half, Senegal had a golden chance to go 2-0 up, but Mane could only blaze the ball over the bar when really well placed following an excellent cross from Ibrahim Mbaye.

However, just another five minutes later, it was 2-0. Zidane Iqbal was caught trying to be too skilful on the edge of his own box and was dispossessed by Lamine Camara, who drove into the box brilliantly and squared for Ismaila Sarr to tap home from close range. 

It would not be long for the third goal to come. The ketchup bottle was well and truly open. The high press from Senegal was too much for Iraq and they again won the ball back high up the pitch, as the ball circulated to Pape Gueye - who had just come on - and he curled a sublime left footed strike into the top corner. 

With just under twenty minutes remaining, Senegal made it 4-0, with substitute P. Gueye again getting on the scoresheet, with another fine left footed strike, even if less spectacular than the first.

In the 82nd minute, it was five. Substitute Iliman Ndiaye was given the ball in space, and the Everton forward drove forwards before firing into the back of the net. An assist on top of his two goals for P. Gueye.

That would be that. A five star performance from Senegal when they needed it most. This hasn't 100% guaranteed their spot in the round of 32, but it is almost certain at this point.
