Coventry City's pursuit of Petar Stanic has collapsed as Olympiacos nears an €8 m agreement, luring the Europa League’s top scorer with the promise of Champions League football.
Newly promoted Premier League outfit Coventry City have been dealt a transfer blow in their pursuit of PFC Ludogorets Razgrad star Petar Stanic, as Olympiacos is set to close a deal with his club.
According to a report by Nikos Kotsis of Sport24.gr, Olympiacos is set to close the deal with Ludogorets Razgrad soon for the transfer of Petar Stanic, making the signing one of their most expensive in recent times.
The Red and Whites and the Bulgarian side have reportedly agreed on a transfer fee of 8 million euros for the permanent signing of the 24-year-old. The update confirmed that Stanic is set to board the flight to Greece within a few days and officially put pen to paper to play for Olympiacos.
Stanic finished as the top scorer of the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League last season, netting seven goals across 10 European matches for The Eagles. We at Olympiacos Roundtable reported a week earlier that Thrylos president Evangelos Marinakis was 'adamant' from the beginning of the transfer links with Ludogorets to make the signing of Stanic by beating Coventry City in the race.
The Piraeus-based club did everything about this imminent deal with patience and regular contacts with the Razgrad outfits, and this is what helped them overcome the newly promoted English top-flight side Coventry City. It is always tough to battle with a Premier League club and, in this case, against last season's Championship table toppers, who had received a fresh injection of cash due to their promotion.
The Serbian attacking midfielder will have the opportunity to feature in the Champions League third round playoffs for the league phase soon with Olympiacos. This could have played as the deciding factor for the player in choosing the Greek giants over Frank Lampard's team.
Stanic made 34 appearances as a regular for Ludogorets Razgrad last campaign, scoring nine goals across all competitions. He has also earned two caps with the Serbia National Team, and has featured quite reliably with the nation's U21 side.
In other news, Olympiacos are right now negotiating with former La Liga side Getafe man Domingos Duarte over a potential transfer. The Portuguese international and the Piraeus club are talking about the player's role at the club, and this situation is expected to be resolved in the next few days. Jose Luis Mendilibar's team has other interests lined up should anything go south on this front.
