Three talking points after Olympiacos' 3-2 win over Kifisia: Gelson Martins' late winner, Chiquinho's assists, and Stefan Ortega's key saves.
Gelson Martins scored his first goal of the season, and what a goal it was, giving Olympiacos the win over Kifisia, which is going through a difficult moment, at the Ap. Nikolaidis Stadium.
It seems this stadium brings good luck to the Portuguese forward, since his previous goal was precisely at Leoforos, in Olympiacos' win over Panathinaikos last April.
The Red-and-White team secured its ninth straight win across all competitions, but in this match, it had to overcome a formidable Kifisia.
The latter ended Olympiacos' seven-match run without conceding a goal by scoring twice, but that was the least of it, as the hosts came close to taking the point.
1. Imanol Alguacil Did Everything He Could
Olympiacos' players did not perform well, as shown in the first quarter, when they conceded three goals. This situation extended through several stretches of the match. The main problem was the players' poor mentality, which became clear when the Red-and-Whites led 2-0.
However, in the final quarter, they conceded two goals, one from Mboula and another from Gerson Sousa, which leveled the match, and Kifisia also scored through Pombo.
Imanol did everything possible to put the match away for Olympiacos before it became a thrilling contest. The Basque coach's substitutions paid off again, as Marius and Martins, who came off the bench, scored.
Coincidentally, Leto's substitutions also worked out, as Mboula and Gerson Sousa scored, the latter with an assist, as did Kyriopoulos, who also came on as a substitute.
Alguacil kept only Puerta in the starting lineup, making 10 changes compared with the Greek Cup match against Marko, while in the previous league match against Kalamata, there were three changes, with Retsos, Chiquinho and Yaremchuk playing instead of Smajlovic, Sá and González.
2. Chiquinho’s Two Assists
In addition, Chiquinho's two assists on Olympiacos' first two goals stand out, showing his importance to the Piraeus team's style of play.
The Portuguese midfielder performed at an excellent level throughout October, and it is no coincidence that the Red-and-Whites ended the month on a winning streak. Chiquinho scored one goal and provided three assists in the last two weeks against Marseille, Panetolikos, and Kifisia.
Marius also scored for the second consecutive league match, having scored against Kalamata and Kifisia. Both times, he came off the bench in the last half hour of the match.
The great Freuler provided the assist for Martins' goal in another match, as we already mentioned, while Roca scored his third goal for Olympiacos, two of them in the last two weeks (against Panetolikos and Kifisia). The Spanish winger, for his part, provided the assist on Jota Silva's first goal against Kalamata.
3. Stefan Ortega Stood Tall
And, of course, Ortega's performance stands out: he shone in 0-0, 0-1, and 0-2 wins for Olympiacos, even though Kifisia had early chances to equalize.
The experienced goalkeeper, one of the Red-and-White team's standout players at the Avenue, had to intervene six times at crucial moments in the match and has maintained a consistently high level of play over the last month and a half.
Now, Olympiacos will look to secure their tenth consecutive win against Rennes, aiming to celebrate their second "double" in France in the last three weeks, following their win against Marseille at the Velodrome.
