Skipping a rest day to support his teammates, Armando "La Hormiga" Gonzalez stunned spectators by mingling with the crowd, proving why the Mexican striker is Europe's rising star of character.
Mexican forward Armando González, it seems, has won over the hearts of the fans of Olympiacos. His humility and affection for the fans of a club he has joined only this season have been making headlines. Affectionately called “La Hormiga”, González has once again shown why he is loved by fans both in Greece and in his home country.
Olympiacos manager Imanol Alguacil decided not to call up the 23-year-old striker against Super League Greece 2 side FC Marko in their Greek Football Cup tie on Wednesday. He wanted to rest the young player against a minor opponent and keep him fit for the upcoming matches. However, “La Hormiga” did not use the opportunity to rest at home; instead, he travelled with the team to the stadium of FC Marko to support his teammates from the stands. This gesture of gratitude and kindness was loved by both his teammates and the fans.
González, while in the stands, also met several Olympiacos fans and greeted them. One of the fans was found wearing the youngster’s Chivas shirt, and the player spoke with him personally. This gesture of humility was appreciated by everyone present.
A graduate of the academy of Mexican club Guadalajara, González played for the reserve side of the club, Tapatío, for 3 years after making his debut in 2020. He then made his debut for the first team of the club in 2024, and made 59 official league appearances for them over two seasons, and scored 29 goals in the process. His goalscoring rate established him as one of the most promising young talents in Mexican and world football.
His performances in Mexico earned him his first move to European football when his present side, Olympiacos, brought him to the club during the summer transfer window of 2026. He became the third Mexican player to play for the club, after Nerry Castillo and Alan Pulido. He made his debut for Thrylos on 30 August 2026 in a game against Asteras Tripolia, and has since made 6 league appearances for the club.
In addition to his club career, González has also played in 11 official fixtures for the senior squad of the Mexico National Football Team since making his debut in 2025. He has scored one goal for El Tricolour. The young striker was part of Mexico’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup held in the United States of America.
The humility and gratitude shown by Armando González have won over his Greek fans in the very short time that he has spent at Olympiacos. If he continues to hold on to his exceptional behaviour, he will undoubtedly become one of the fan favourites at his current club.
