A botched transfer valuation leaves Edson Álvarez in limbo after West Ham's late attempt to revive negotiations failed to sway Olympiacos back to the table.
According to a report by media outlet TransferFeed, which cited an agent who was a key person involved in the deal that allowed Mexican defensive midfielder Edson Álvarez to join Turkish club Fenerbahçe on loan, Greek side Olympiacos had sent an offer of 10 million euros plus 5 million in add-ons to Ávarez’s current club, West Ham United, for securing the services of the player. However, the Hammers had rejected the offer, deeming it to be too low.
Now, according to the agent, West Ham have reanalysed their position regarding the deal and have contacted the Piraeus environment in the hopes that a deal could still be up for negotiation. However, Olympiacos rejected the advances of the English club this time as they are, reportedly, no longer pursuing the deal.
It was reported in an earlier article by TransferFeed that the price that West Ham asked for the transfer of Álvarez, an amount of €15 million, was deemed too high by clubs, and as such, the 28-year-old has not found any club till now, and continues to remain at the London club. His current contract with the Hammers runs until 30 June 2028.
A graduate of the academy of Mexican side Club América, Álvarez made his debut for the first team of the club in 2016, and left for Dutch side Ajax after making 86 league appearances for the Águilas, and winning one Liga MX: Apertura in 2018 and one Copa MX: Clausura in 2019
While at Ajax, the midfielder played 98 official league fixtures and won both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 Eredivisie titles, along with the 2020-21 KNVB Cup. In 2023, Álvarez left the club to join West Ham United, where he has since made 59 official league appearances. He spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Fenerbahçe, where he won the 2025 Turkish Super Cup.
In addition to his club career, Álvarez has also played 102 official matches for the Mexico National Football Team after making appearances for their U-18 and U-20 sides. He was part of the squads that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019, 2023 and 2025, and the CONCACAF Nations League in the 2024-25 season.
It remains to be seen whether Edson Álvarez continues with West Ham or leaves for a new club before his contract terminates in 2028. Olympiacos, for their part, must think about whether they need further reinforcements for their squad.
