Getafe man and former Real Madrid forward Borja Mayoral halts Olympiacos' search for a goalscorer, forcing head coach Imanol Alguacil to pivot toward new targets as the club seeks urgent attacking reinforcements.
Reports from Spain suggest an end to Olympiacos' pursuit of Getafe forward Borja Mayoral, after the Greek club entered into the transfer market for a proven striker to replace the injured Ayoub El Kaabi.
According to an update by Spanish journalist Alvaro Garcia via Gazzetta.gr, Real Madrid youth academy graduate Borja Mayoral is not willing to part ways with Getafe for a move to Olympiacos now. The Red and Whites were interested in acquiring his services to add depth to their attacking department, consisting of Armando 'La Hormiga' Gonzalez, Roman Yaremchuk and Clayton.
While the Mexican international has stepped up in the absence of El Kaabi, newly appointed head coach Imanol Alguacil has asked the club for another forward to aid his charge of a domestic double and a piece of European silverware.
Last season, Mayoral featured in 16 LaLiga matches for Getafe, scoring four goals and assisting once. He has been playing for the Madrid-based side since 2022, firstly on loan from Los Blancos and then permanently at the club, where he has scored a total of 38 career goals.
Getafe were not officially approached by Olympiacos for the 29-year-old's services as the player expressed no desire to leave the Spanish side.
With Mayoral out of the shortlist, Thrylos must now focus on their other targets in the likes of Celta Vigo's Borja Iglesias, Torino's Che Adams and Turkish club Samunspor's Marius. Olympiacos are not looking for a free agent, but are actively seeking a proven forward man, who do not have high expectations of game time.
The Greek giants are still betting on new signing Gonzalez to lead the attacking lines upfront as the sole striker in Alguacil's 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formations. However, La Hormiga failed to find the net during the Basque manager's debut on the Karaiskakis touchline, as they lost 1-0 to OFI Crete in a Super League Greece fixture. The fans on the stands clearly expressed their displeasure with Alguacil's tactics, who was reportedly brought in as an extension of Conference League-winning coach Jose Luis Mendilibar. Despite this performance, it is worth noting that Alguacil got only two full training sessions with the team and he is yet to ascertain what works best for individual players.
As things stand, Marius has emerged as a strong favourite alongside Iglesias, who was included in Spain's World Cup squad during the last tournament in the Americas ahead of the new season.
