Riding a wave of European victories, Gelson Martins highlights newfound squad unity and depth as Olympiacos chase the league summit under Imanol Alguacil.
Olympiacos winger Gelson Martins opened up on the club's performances ahead of the Super League Greece clash against Kalamata on 25 October 2026 (Sunday) at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
Speaking in an interview on Magenta TV via Gazzetta.gr before Olympiacos' league fixture against Kalamata, Gelson Martins shifted the focus to the team's efforts to bond together for every matchday after a slow start to the new season.
"The team is in a very good phase of development. We are all united, and this is something very important for us. What we work on every day brings results. We have bonded as a group, and I think we are in our best phase. However, we want to develop even more," remarked the 31-year-old Portuguese international.
The former Sporting CP man's praise for his squad comes after Olympiacos secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sparta Praha in their latest UEFA Europa League clash. The win ensured the extension of the Red and Whites' victorious run in European competition, as they defeated the likes of Jagiellonia Bialystok and Marseille in the two matchdays before the Sparta fixture.
Armando 'Hormiga' Gonzalez netted the decider in the match after scoring in Olympiacos' Europa League opener against Jagiellonia. Apart from the Mexican star's goal, the entire team look comfortable under pressure and with the ball. Everyone had a positive game, and head coach Imanol Alguacil has slowly steadied the ship after being appointed at the helm of the squad.
Martins delved into the squad depth and the numerous profiles present in the current team, which helps in bringing an unique emphasis on the gameplay. He said: "We knew that this would be the program, and that is why we are a great team. We are all useful and available to help the team whenever it is needed. There is no energy issue. We will all be ready; we will have the necessary freshness to face the match against Kalamata."
With seven matches done in the Super League Greece this season, Olympiacos are trailing league leaders Panathinaikos by just two points. Three points against Kalamata will put enormous pressure on Thrylos' eternal rivals, and any slip up from their side would be beneficial for the Piraeus club.
