Widespread union protests in France could force UEFA to reschedule this high-stakes clash between Stade Rennais and Olympiacos, as local authorities prioritise city security over the traditional European football calendar.
According to a report by Agence France-Presse via Patris.gr, the prefecture of Rennes has informed the news agency that they are discussing with authorities to move up its UEFA Europa League league phase encounter against Olympiacos, which is scheduled for November 5, 2026, in the French city.
Stade Rennais and Olympiacos could lock horns against each other on November 4, 2026, instead of a day later. There has been a joint union call in France on November 5 as part of the ongoing protests throughout the country. Therefore, security deployments will be on the rise in the city, and holding a football match in such circumstances could be an operational risk.
While Wednesdays are traditionally reserved for Champions League nights, fans can see an exception in this case due to security measures. Olympiacos are set to feature against Marko in the Greek Cup and Kifisia in the Super League Greece ahead of their European clash in Rennes. Even if the match gets scheduled for November 4, the Red and Whites will have three days to prepare.
The Greek giants have not asked for any information regarding the current situation as they await orders from UEFA. Imanol Alguacil's men will be ready to take on the French side in full fitness as things stand, but their present focus is on domestic competitions, where any slip-up could prove to be costly.
Discussions are underway between the French security forces, the state administration and the club to determine an outcome to this dilemma soon. A final decision is expected to be made in the coming hours, and we will update this space as soon as the news drops.
Meanwhile, in other news, Olympiacos could reignite their attempt to sign Genoa midfield maestro Morten Frendrup during the winter transfer window. As per an earlier report by Olympiacos Roundtable, Thrylos had to settle for the likes of Gustavo Puerta and Remo Freuler this summer, as they did not want to match Genoa's asking price for the Dane, which was rumoured to be over 10 million euros.
The Serie A side will keep pushing to extract a similar amount in January, but Olympiacos will hope to negotiate a reduction in their demands in exchange for preferential future clauses. Convincing Frendrup for a transfer also remains a major hurdle to surpass as he has never felt unsettled throughout his stay at Genoa. More details to follow soon.
