Olympiacos boss Jose Luis Mendilibar secures his top midfield target as the Greek giants finalise a €10 million deal for the Venezuelan international and former MLS side New York Red Bulls man Cristian Casseres Jr., following Toulouse's acquisition of a replacement.

Greek Super League side Olympiacos have reached an agreement with Toulouse for the transfer of Cristian Cásseres Jr.

According to an update by TransferFeed, Olympiacos have an understanding on transfer fees with Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse to seal the signature of Cristian Cásseres Jr. in the coming days.

An earlier report by Nikos Kotsis of Sport24.gr confirmed that Olympiacos were increasingly closing in on securing the Venezuelan international after raising their bid to €10 million. The Red and Whites manager, Jose Luis Mendilibar, personally asked the club to sign a new midfielder this summer and named Racing de Santander man Gustavo Puerta and Toulouse's Cásseres as potential reinforcements in the engine room.

Mendilibar gave the nod to pursue both players and, therefore, ran transfer proceedings in parallel to at least get one of them done. Thrylos managed to get the green light from the two before contacting their respective clubs, but right now, it seems that Cásseres is going to be the first player, ahead of Puerta, to join the Olympiacos midfield. Whether this signing will dent the other one is a matter which is yet to be judged.

We at Olympiacos Roundtable reported that Toulouse dropped their demands to €10 million plus bonuses in this transfer window for the 26-year-old.

The imminent transfer was further facilitated by the recent announcement of an agreement between Les Violets and Viborg FF for Thomas Jørgensen. Toulouse are set to pay a club-record fee of €9 million, including add-ons, as the Dane will join the French outfit on a four-year deal. Sometimes there is a gentleman's agreement between clubs to await an official agreement until the selling side buys a replacement. This could have been the case for Olympiacos and Toulouse, as the Greek giants were waiting for their negotiating partner to bring Jørgensen to the club.

As for Cásseres, the Red and Whites already have a verbal deal with his entourage on contract tenure and salary. It is only a matter of time before his signing is announced officially through club channels.

The former Red Bulls New York man began his youth career with Atletico Venezuela before graduating from Deportivo La Guaira in Venezuela. He joined the New York Red Bulls in 2018 and was immediately sent to play for their sister club New York Red Bulls II for the upcoming season. However, he went on to make over 100 appearances for the first team till 2023, scoring 14 goals across all competitions throughout his stint there.
