Jose Luis Mendilibar's team are already in preseason (in the Netherlands) training as they prepare to be physically fit for the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.
The Greek giants will compete in the third qualifying round of the UCL as they look to secure a place in next season’s league phase.
With this goal in mind, one of the positions Olympiacos have identified for reinforcement is the midfield.
According to a report from Sport-FM.gr, Olympiacos are interested in signing 34-year-old Switzerland international Remo Freuler.
According to the report, the deal is a complicated one for the Greek club, but it is currently being explored.
Even so, the same report states that the priority for both Mendilibar and the Red-and-Whites’ sporting department is Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat.
Talks with Amrabat are reportedly ongoing, and the player appears willing to continue his career in Greece, although he is taking his time to evaluate all the financial details.
Olympiacos are also carefully assessing the financial aspects of the deal, as the midfielder remains under contract with Fenerbahce through 2028.
Another alternative to Amrabat and Freuler mentioned in the report is Marcelo Brozovic, who became a free agent after his contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia expired on June 30.
Returning to Freuler, the Switzerland international has also, as mentioned earlier, been linked with major Serie A clubs including AS Roma and Juventus.
A recent update published by TransferFeed reiterated Roma’s interest in the experienced midfielder.
A couple of weeks ago, the same site also cited a report from TuttoMercatoWeb stating that Juventus could consider Freuler as a potential signing, having wanted him on multiple occasions, with Luciano Spalletti reportedly a strong admirer of the midfielder.
All of these reports come after, according to Nikos Kotsis, Olympiacos withdrew from the race to sign Serbia international Petar Stanic, who was also being pursued by newly promoted Premier League club Coventry City.
After the clubs failed to reach an agreement over the transfer, Olympiacos shifted their focus to other midfield targets.
According to reports, the role Mendilibar specifically wanted Stanic for could instead be covered by recent Nottingham Forest loanee Jota Silva.
So, after this twist, the profile Thrylos are now looking for is a true box-to-box midfielder.
