Olympiacos face competition from Monza as unsettled Croatian star Lovro Majer seeks an escape from Wolfsburg following the German club’s top-flight relegation.
Olympiacos have set their sights on acquiring the services of Wolfsburg midfield star Lovro Majer this summer.
According to an update by TransferFeed, Olympiacos are inquiring about a potential transfer for Lovro Majer, as the 28-year-old has reportedly expressed a desire to leave his current side ahead of the new season.
The Croatian midfielder is expected to be part of an exodus following Wolfsburg's relegation from the Bundesliga last campaign, and the sales of certain players have become 'unavoidable' for the club. Majer is unsettled and wants to be sold this summer, as he feels his abilities will be better rewarded elsewhere.
The German side are facing economic problems with the relegation, and they will need to offload some of their stars to balance the scales. As of now, Majer is considered expendable as the club is not looking to pay his salary and could do with the transfer fees from his possible sale.
The Greek giants, however, might need to compete with newly promoted Serie A side AC Monza to secure the signing of the former Stade Rennes man. Both clubs are in the process of gaining more information on the player and understanding his demands, and they are yet to send an official bid to Wolfsburg.
Majer began his career with his local club Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia, later joining the Lokomotiva Zagreb youth academy. He was promoted to their senior team in 2016, when he replaced Eros Grezda in a UEFA Europa League qualifying phase match at Estadi Comunal against Santa Coloma.
After 53 appearances and 14 goals across all competitions with Lokomotiva, Majer signed for Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2018. He became one of head coach Zoran Mamic's integral players after a slow start at the club. Next, he joined Stade Rennes, and then signed a five-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg in 2023, for whom he went on to feature 29 times last season, scoring twice and assisting thrice in the German top flight.
Apart from Majer, Olympiacos have made another mark in the German transfer market by 'launching an improved bid' for St. Pauli first-choice right-back Manolis Saliakas. Jose Luis Mendilibar's side is focused on signing a youth academy product, as he will offload some pressure from the non-EU quota regulations. Roundtable has already reported on this news, which has claimed that the Red and Whites have identified Saliakas as the one to deputise for new signing Pablo Maffeo.
