Olympiacos has signed 18-year-old left-back Athanasios Christopoulos from Legia Warsaw. The Greek defender returns home as a free agent before the window closes.
Olympiacos is making another significant investment for the future, bringing 18-year-old left-back Athanasios Christopoulos to Greece from Legia Warsaw. The club is putting the final touches on the transfer just before the free-agent transfer window expires.
The young defender, born on January 5, 2008, returns home after a successful two-year stint in Poland. There, he won two consecutive championships with Legia's second team (U19) and made significant appearances in the UEFA Youth League, including against PAOK's U19 team.
He took his first steps in football at the Asteris AKTOR academies, signing his first professional contract with Arkades at just 15. In June 2024, at 16, he moved to Warsaw, with Asteris retaining a resale percentage. Although he started his career as a central defender, he has now successfully established himself on the left wing of defense.
At the same time, Christopoulos has been a regular member of the national youth teams (U15, U17, and U19) since age 15, with strong performances at the international level.
This move is part of Olympiacos' overall strategy to strengthen the Greek element across all age groups in the club. Although he was under contract until 2027, the player's desire to wear the Olympiacos jersey paved the way for his acquisition as a free agent. The 18-year-old full-back is initially intended for the Red and Whites' B team and U19 team.
In other news, Gustavo Sa and Leon Bailey are on individual programs ahead of Olympiacos' derby against Panathinaikos. Sa is recovering from a calf injury, while Bailey is working on his physical condition.
According to Sport24, Olympiacos' coaching and medical staff have drawn up a specific program for both. For different reasons, but with the same denominator. To have both ready to come in and play on their return to action, starting with the derby against Panathinaikos.
Gustavo Sá and Leon Bailey are doing their programs. They are very different. But at the same time, they are similar. Both have been on the field for a few days and are doing individual training. The Portuguese is coming off a difficult calf injury, so he is training more conservatively and at lower speeds. His reintegration requires caution and patience.
Bailey is a completely different case. He stayed in Athens and did not go with the Jamaican national team because he needed to improve his physical and competitive condition. He did so to improve his physical and competitive condition. And for this reason, he is going through difficult times at Renti. The Red and Whites have prepared a very strong, demanding, and long schedule for him, which includes everything.
