Home soil pressure mounts for the USMNT as they face Australian underdogs, a returning Turkish side, and a hungry Paraguay in an unpredictable battle for qualification.

Group D may not look like a standout group in this year's 2026 World Cup, but by June 25th, after the final group-stage match has been played, it could go down as one of the tournament’s most exciting. No team can be called a clear-cut favourite, resulting in every game being a must-win for each country.

The United States will be the nation that attracts the most eyes, playing at their first home World Cup since 1994. The pressure and expectations that come with this could make or break The Stars and Stripes, who will be hoping to make a deep run in an international tournament. After years of underwhelming performances at the biggest stage, 2026 could be the year the USA finally reach their potential.

On the other side of the spectrum is Australia, who will be going into each game relatively pressure-free. The Socceroos may not have a star player as recognisable as anyone on the USMNT roster, but as a unit, they should strike fear into whoever they come up against, whether that be the nations in their group or a tournament ‘favourite’ if they are to progress through the group stages.

After a 24-year absence, Turkiye return to the World Cup, with a point to prove and six competitions to make up for. It seems impossible for such a football-crazed nation to be absent from the sport’s biggest tournament for so long, but with star players such as Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz, they have every chance to make up for their recent failure at the qualification stage.

Paraguay are the final nation that makes up Group D, demonstrating how competitive every fixture will be when these nations come face-to-face. They are another side who have been waiting a while for their next chance to prove themselves globally, a painful 16 years since they made it all the way to the quarter-finals in South Africa. The South American side will be hoping they can recreate something just as magical in their upcoming campaign.

Australia

The Socceroos are making their sixth consecutive World Cup appearance at the upcoming tournament and will likely prove to be a tricky opponent for whoever they face. Australia are a side who have consistently proven they are able to exceed expectations, not through player starpower, but pure grit and an intangible spirit they bring into every match they play.

Four years ago, they reached the Round of 16 in Qatar, bowing out to eventual winners Argentina. Getting to the knockout rounds in 2026 would certainly be seen as a success and is certainly achievable in the group they have been placed in, but it is going to take the same determination the Socceroos have shown in recent tournaments to do so.

Tony Popovic's appointment midway through the World Cup qualification stage saw the nation have an upturn in form, as he demanded a more physical and defensively sound style of play from his side. He led his nation to an eight-game unbeaten run, which confirmed that Australia will play on the biggest stage in world football.

Popovic deploys a five-at-the-back formation, which aims to frustrate teams, and relies on everybody on the pitch to put their head where it hurts in order to not concede. Centre-back Alessandro Circati has emerged as a vital part of this system, and at 22-years-of-age, will attract plenty of eyes if Australia were to exceed expectations in the tournament.

At the top end of the pitch, 20-year-old Nestroy Irankunda is another youngster who will bear a lot of the creative duties in his side. The Watford winger has pace to burn, and looks to dribble past his man on every occasion, and will likely be involved in any chances created by The Socceroos.

Australia's first game against Turkiye will be a contest of physicality versus technical ability and will make for an entertaining watch for the neutral. However, their key fixture sees them pitted against Paraguay for the final group stage match, where qualification pressure could be on both sides, who will be desperate to finish at least third place.

Prediction: Fourth

Despite the Socceroos' ability to cause upsets in any match, their lack of firepower going forward, combined with them facing dangerous offensive sides in the group, suggests they will be the side to finish bottom of Group D. However, it is a group that is going to be tightly contested, and it is almost certain the Aussies won't go down without a fight.

Paraguay

La Albirroja return to the World Cup stage for the first time since their memorable campaign in 2010, when South Africa hosted the tournament. They made a shocking deep-run into the quarter-finals, where they put eventual champions Spain to the test, falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat.

The South American side will be hoping to emulate anything close to that performance in this year's campaign, and may be going slightly under the radar amongst football fans.

Under the guidance of Gustavo Alfaro, Paraguay emerged as one of the continent's surprise packages during qualification. The former Ecuador and Costa Rica boss managed his side to a comfortable sixth-place finish in the table, picking up some memorable wins against tournament favourites Brazil and Argentina along the way. Alfaro has transformed Paraguay into a robust, hard-to-beat side who get bodies behind the ball, whilst looking to nick a goal on the break through the use of their pacy, direct attacking options.

They may not have the superstar power as some of their South American neighbours, but as a unit, they are not lacking in experience and desire. Sunderland defender Omar Alderete is a key cog in the Alfaro system. The 29-year-old isn’t afraid to put his head where it hurts and will be hoping to overachieve with both club and nation this season.

Going forward, veteran winger Miguel Almiron and Strasbourg youngster Julio Enciso act as the team’s main creative outlets, with the latter hoping to have a breakthrough tournament similar to that of James Rodríguez during the 2014 Rio World Cup.

Paraguay's opening match against the United States kicks off on June 12th, 9 p.m. ET (2 a.m. BST), and will arguably be their most important throughout the entire group stage process. If they manage to pick up a positive result against one of the home nations, their confidence will be sky-high, and their group rivals will start to feel serious pressure.

Prediction: Third

Although Paraguay may not have players of the same calibre as the United States or Turkiye, Gustavo Alfaro's side will be a team that is going to be hard to beat, and perhaps potential giant-killers at this year's World Cup. The tournament's expanded format could see the South American outfit sneak into the knockout rounds through a third-place finish, where they'll provide a tough test for whoever they come up against.

USA

The United States are being led into the tournament by former Spurs and Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, whose time at the helm has been controversial to say the least. He has been appointed with a clear goal: to guide the USMNT to a memorable World Cup run on home turf.

However, the build-up to the tournament has left fans concerned, and there seems to be a downcast mood around camp going into one of the most important tournaments in the nation's footballing history. Despite the fanbase being unconvinced, there is no doubt that the home nation has been handed somewhat of a favourable group where they can be seen as one of the bigger countries out of the four.

The USA will be relying on players like Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams, who helped the Cherries secure a remarkable sixth-place position in the Premier League, and who captains The Stars and Stripes. Christian Pulisic will also be spearheading the frontline for the States, a fan-favourite who will hope to end his season on a high after a Serie A campaign in which he found the net eight times for AC Milan.

Players like Weston McKennie, Folarin Balogun and Antonee Robinson also have enough quality to ensure that, if they play to their full potential, they can deliver a successful run in the 2026 World Cup.

They will go into the tournament with boosted confidence as they defeated Senegal 3-2, with goals from Pulisic and Balogun, in their last friendly before their opening fixture against Paraguay on June 13th. It has all the elements to be a thrilling match, with the United States likely to play an aggressive, attacking style against a Paraguay side who will be looking to frustrate their opponent and nick a goal on the break.

The key game for the host nation could easily be their final group fixture against Turkiye on the 26th of June. Two evenly matched sides will go head-to-head in a game where everything could be on the line, depending on how the group stages play out.

Prediction: Second

Despite having some of the best individual talent in the group, the pressure of being a home nation alongside a shaky build-up to the tournament means that Pochettino's men may have a few wobbles along the way. That said, I still feel there is enough quality in the American roster to advance to the knockout stages in a second-place position.

Turkiye

Back on football's biggest stage for the first time in over two decades, Turkiye will be looking to make up for lost time in the upcoming tournament. The Crescent Stars ended their World Cup hiatus by navigating a tricky playoff path, which saw them defeat Romania and Kosovo to book their place in North America 2026.

Vincenzo Montella's appointment in 2023 saw the Italian take over a side low on confidence and without a clear style of play that desperately needed change. Montella transformed the nation into a side that during Euro 2024 managed to reach the quarter-finals - the first time Turkiye had done so in any international tournament for 16 years.

The 51-year-old boss has been the architect behind creating one of Turkiye's strongest squads in history and will be aiming to provide fans with a performance that builds on their last international tournament and look to potentially go even further. By utilising a common 4-2-3-1 shape, it allows the tactically astute Montella to adjust his side throughout the match to better suit the flow of the game.

Arda Guler is undoubtedly Turkiye's star player and has seemingly surpassed the label of an emerging talent, making him a key figure in his nation's 2026 World Cup. Guler's creativity is nothing short of world-class, and his ability to change the game within an instant is what makes him the most dangerous player throughout the whole of Group D.

The 21-year-old has made 47 appearances in all competitions for La Liga giants Real Madrid and picked up 19 goal contributions along the way. Demonstrating that despite his young age, Guler will possess enough experience to perform on the World's biggest stage.

Kenan Yildiz is another player who adds to Turkiye's overwhelming attacking threat, with the Juventus forward coming off the back of a breakthrough season in Serie A for his side. Finding the back of the net 10 times and racking up 11 assists will ensure the direct winger will be going into the tournament brimming with confidence.

The position in which the Turks are slightly weaker would be centre-forward, as they do not have a proven striker to lead the line. In a squad with an abundance of creativity, the nation is crying out for an out-and-out centre-forward to come in and tuck away chances created by Guler and Yildiz. It is why, especially against the bigger teams in the tournament, they may struggle to make an impact deep into the competition.

Turkiye's opening game against Australia will be the perfect occasion to put in a dominant performance, sending a message to the other nations in the group. It is why it can also be viewed as the most important fixture, due to the fact that if the Crescent Stars pick up momentum early on, they will be hard to put a stop to.

Prediction: First

Despite lacking a star player up front, the individual talent amongst the squad, paired with a manager who ensures his teams are tactically organised, leads me to believe it will be the Turks who top Group D. They are without the pressure of the USA who are the only team that comes close to matching their starpower, and will be hoping to have wrapped up qualification before their final game against The States on June 25th.
