Germany arrive as clear favourites, carrying the expectation that accompanies four world titles and a squad packed with elite-level talent. Yet recent World Cup disappointments mean there is little room for complacency.

Behind them, Ecuador and Ivory Coast look set to engage in a fascinating battle for qualification. Both possess athletic, technically gifted squads capable of troubling established powers, while Curaçao enter as one of the stories of the tournament after becoming the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup.

Germany's quest to re-establish themselves among football's elite provides the group's central narrative, but the fight behind them could prove equally compelling.

Germany arrive in North America carrying a blend of optimism and a sense of unfinished business. They were regular challengers from 2002 to 2014, making it to the semifinals or better in four straight tournaments and winning the World Cup championship in Brazil in 2014.

Since lifting that World Cup, they have suffered successive group-stage eliminations, a startling decline for one of international football's most consistent tournament performers. Under Julian Nagelsmann, however, there is a growing sense that Germany have regained their direction. Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller and İlkay Gundogan have retired after participating in Euro 2024.

Manuel Neuer, however, has officially come out of international retirement and has been named in Germany’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 40-year-old Bayern Munich legend returns to international football to serve as Germany's first-choice goalkeeper for what will be his fifth World Cup.

The squad comprises seven Bayern Munich players; among them are Jamal Musiala, 40-year-old Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, and Leon Goretzka. Away from Bayern, they include Leroy Sané (Galatasaray), Antonio Rüdiger (Real Madrid), Kai Havertz (Arsenal), Florian Wirtz (Liverpool) and several more. 

Former German American dual-national target Nathaniel Brown did get included in Germany’s 26-man squad after all. There are some surprising omissions, as Karim Adeyemi, Marc-André ter Stegen, and Niclas Füllkrug have all been excluded from the squad. However, this team remains resilient and competent.

This squad combines experienced leaders such as Joshua Kimmich, Antonio Rüdiger and Neuer with a generation of creative talent led by Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. Their ability to dominate possession and control matches makes them one of the stronger teams entering the competition.

Qualification Context

Germany qualified comfortably and have steadily developed under Nagelsmann's guidance. They clinched top spot in Group A and secured their place at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after recording an emphatic 6-0 victory over Slovakia on the final matchday of European qualifying.

More importantly, they enter the tournament with a settled tactical identity and far greater stability than they possessed heading into recent major tournaments.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Only a few teams in the competition can match Germany's technical quality between the lines. Musiala and Wirtz offer creativity, movement and unpredictability, while Kimmich remains one of the game's premier midfield organisers.

The question is whether Germany can consistently convert territorial dominance into goals. Against compact, well-drilled opponents, they have occasionally lacked the sharpness needed to turn control into victories.

Star Player: Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz’s first season at Liverpool may not have fully reflected his immense talent after his £116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen to the Merseyside club, but Wirtz continues to flourish in international football, alongside Jamal Musiala, who needs little introduction.

Operating between midfield and attack, Wirtz gives Germany attacking incisiveness, composure and the ability to unlock stubborn defences.

Prediction: Group Position: 1st

Germany possesses the deepest squad and the most complete tactical framework in Group E. They should top the section, though neither Ecuador nor Ivory Coast will make the task straightforward.

They are four-time winners and will have a chance to match Brazil’s record of five World Cup titles. Under Julian Nagelsmann, they will seek to move on from their recent challenges.

There is a nice blend of youth, experience and talent in the German squad heading to this summer’s competition. The biggest question may simply be whether Germany can consistently translate their possession and dominance into goals against organised defensive teams.

Ecuador may not attract the same attention as some of South America's traditional powers, but they arrive as one of the most balanced teams in the tournament. Built around a physically imposing defence and an increasingly influential midfield, they have become difficult opponents for virtually anyone.

Tournament football often rewards organisation and discipline, two qualities Ecuador possess in abundance. Their challenge will be finding enough goals against the strongest sides.

Ecuador’s first appearance at a World Cup was in 2002, and they have qualified three times since then, with 2006 being the only year they’ve managed to go beyond the group stage (they were knocked out in the round of sixteen).

Willian Pacho has won back-to-back Champions League titles while playing as a starting central defender for PSG. Fellow defender Piero Hincapié lost in the Champions League final last weekend as PSG defeated Arsenal.

Left-back Pervis Estupiñán made 84 appearances for Brighton before joining AC Milan. Enner Valencia, 36, is currently at Liga MX side Pachuca after a long career as a forward.

Kendry Páez, 19, was sold to Chelsea for €20 million at just 16 years of age. Central midfielder Pedro Vite, 23, whom MLS fans may recall, had 105 appearances with Vancouver Whitecaps before joining Liga MX side Pumas UNAM. 

Qualification Context

Ecuador navigated South American qualifying impressively, demonstrating resilience and consistency against some of the world's toughest opposition. Their qualification campaign reinforced the sense that the squad is a mature, well-constructed team.

In the South American qualifications, Ecuador finished second ahead of national teams like Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay. The squad had to overcome the FIFA fine on the Byron Castillo case, which cost them three points, but they remained consistent.

They were beaten just twice in the qualifications, the last time being in Guayaquil in the final game against Argentina. They did have a few draws along the way, but to finish second in CONMEBOL is a testament to the excellent collective job they have done under head coach Sebastián Beccacece.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The defensive platform is excellent. With Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié anchoring the back line and Moisés Caicedo protecting them from midfield, Ecuador are exceptionally difficult to play through.

The concern lies at the other end of the pitch. While they possess exciting young attackers, they occasionally lack the clinical edge needed to turn strong performances into comfortable victories.

Star Player: Moisés Caicedo

The £115 million Chelsea midfielder has developed into one of the most complete midfielders in world football. His ability to break up attacks, dictate tempo and drive transitions makes him the heartbeat of this Ecuador side. Caicedo’s ability to disrupt midfield rhythm could become one of the most debated tactical storylines of the entire group stage.

Prediction: Group Position: 2nd

Ecuador's defensive solidity and midfield control should be enough to edge Ivory Coast in the race for qualification and secure a place in the knockout rounds.

If Ecuador can get off to a good start against Ivory Coast in their opener, they might be in fantastic shape to progress by beating Curacao in their second encounter before facing Germany to close off the group.

Ivory Coast arrive with genuine belief that they can finally make history at the World Cup. Despite producing generations of elite footballers, the Elephants have never progressed beyond the group stage in any of their previous appearances.

This squad may not possess the star power of some of their predecessors, but it is arguably more balanced. There is pace in attack, experience in midfield and athleticism throughout the side.

Qualification Context

Following a respectable AFCON campaign that ended in the quarterfinals, Ivory Coast enter the tournament with momentum and a sense that they are progressing well.

The Elephants booked a place in the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA after a 3-0 win over Kenya in their last Group F match sent them top of the section ahead of Gabon.

The Elephants’ main competitors during the qualification campaign were Gabon, and there was a crucial moment on June 7, 2024, in Korhogo when the Ivorians claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory courtesy of a goal from Seko Fofana.

But they suffered their first setback four days later in a goalless draw with Kenya. They met Gabon again on September 9 in Franceville, and the Elephants stayed a point ahead of their opponents, holding onto that position with another goalless draw.

Having already beaten the islanders emphatically by a margin of 9-0 on the first day, they further improved their goal difference with a convincing 7-0 win over Seychelles on match day nine.

They will appear in the World Cup for the first time since Brazil 2014, where they were knocked out in the group stage, as they have been in all their previous appearances.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The Ivorians are at their most dangerous when matches become open and transitional. Players such as Amad Diallo, Simon Adingra and Sébastien Haller thrive when given space to attack.

However, defensive concentration can sometimes waver against technically superior opponents. Against teams capable of controlling possession, they may spend long periods without the ball.

Star Player: Yan Diomande

The 19-year-old winger is attracting interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs for good reason, with news breaking recently that Liverpool remain front-runners for his signature. Fearless, direct and blessed with outstanding acceleration, he could emerge as one of the breakout stars of the tournament.

Prediction: Group Position: 3rd

Ivory Coast have enough quality to challenge Ecuador for second place and could become one of the strongest third-placed teams in the competition. Fine margins may ultimately prevent them from finishing higher.

Every World Cup needs a story that captures the imagination, and Curaçao provide one of the most remarkable narratives of 2026. Led by the vastly experienced Dick Advocaat, Curaçao arrive with little external pressure and a lot of pride.

With a population of just 156,000, this nation has overtaken Iceland as the smallest nation to reach a World Cup.

Qualification Context

Curacao, led by the extremely experienced Dick Advocaat, who at the age of 78 will become the oldest coach in World Cup history, prevailed in a CONCACAF qualification stage when they surpassed Dwight Yorke’s Trinidad & Tobago and Steve McClaren’s Jamaica, among others.

They conceded only three goals in six games in the final round. Advocaat's tactics are based upon a deep defensive shape, a well-drilled and organised structure and using the flanks tenaciously for counter-attacking.

Qualification itself represented a historic achievement. Drawing heavily from players developed within the Dutch football system, Curaçao demonstrated discipline and resilience throughout the CONCACAF pathway.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Organisation will be their greatest weapon. Advocaat's teams are rarely chaotic, and Curaçao will seek to frustrate opponents before looking for opportunities on the counterattack or from set pieces.

The challenge is obvious. They face opponents with greater depth, experience and individual quality across every area of the pitch.

Star Player: Leandro Bacuna

The captain remains the face of Curaçao football. With Premier League experience (nearly 100 Premier League appearances for Cardiff City (11) and Aston Villa (85) between 2013 and 2019, contributing with six goals and six assists) and more international appearances than any player in the nation's history, his leadership will be invaluable.

Prediction: Group Position: 4th

Simply competing at the World Cup is a landmark achievement. Curaçao may struggle to achieve results, but their presence alone is one of the tournament's remarkable success stories.

Group E revolves around Germany's attempt to reassert themselves as genuine contenders after a decade of World Cup frustration. Julian Nagelsmann's side have the talent, balance and tournament pedigree to finish top.

Behind them, Ecuador's defensive structure and midfield authority give them a slight edge over an ambitious Ivory Coast side capable of causing problems for anyone. Curaçao complete the group as inspirational newcomers, hoping to leave a lasting impression.

Germany should lead the way, but the contest for second place promises to be one of the most closely fought battles of the entire World Cup 2026 group stage.
