Kylian Mbappé’s relentless goal-scoring machine faces a resilient La Albirroja squad fresh from a stunning upset over Germany. Will Les Bleus dominate or can Paraguay defy the odds?
France has been the best country at this World Cup so far. There isn't much controversy in saying it: in every game they have played, they have blown their opponents away, scoring three in each of their opening four games, truly making them the team to beat right now.
Paraguay, on the other hand, were able to pull off one of the great World Cup upsets the other day when they were able to beat the five-time winners Germany dramatically, taking them all the way to penalties, which saw them qualify through a Jose Canale penalty, putting them through to the final 16 for the first time since 2010.
Les Blues know that this is a game where anything but a resounding victory will feel like a little bit hampering on their incredibly high spirits. The 2018 winners have had victories over Iraq, Norway, Senegal and Sweden so far and are looking to make it a fifth consecutive win.
Captain Kylian Mbappé has been one of the players to watch at this World Cup, scoring six goals in his first four games, including braces against Senegal, Iraq and Sweden. This has allowed him to score 18 World Cup Goals, two behind Messi, with the Frenchman being twelve years younger. Mbappe has also scored 10 knockout goals at the World Cup, making him the leader in that stat.
France has managed to score from other areas of the pitch as well. Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele flourished when he was able to net a sensational hat-trick against Norway, and also managed to grab a goal against Iraq to up his tally to four goals. Bradley Barcola has also managed to score two goals in his first-ever major international tournament.
Paraguay haven't had quite the goal scoring prowess of Les Blues, but the La Albirroja have bounced back perfectly after their nightmare opening 4-1 defeat to USMNT where it looked like their World Cup appearance was to be short lived.
They bounced back incredibly with a hard-worked 1-0 win over group favourites Turkey, which saw an early Matias Galzara goal be enough to get them over the line, despite former Newcastle player Miguel Almiron being the first player to be sent off for speaking to an opposition player with his mouth covered.
An uneventful 0-0 draw with Australia was enough to get them out of the group stage for the first time in 16 years, setting them up for a huge tie against Germany. Kai Havertz cancelled out a first-half goal from Paraguay's Julio Enciso, and despite some VAR controversy, the game went to penalties. Neither team took good penalties, but after a Jonathan Tah miss and a Jose Canale goal, it was La Albirroja who pulled off this massive upset, setting up this monster tie with the tournament favourites.
Team News
There are a few small concerns on Deschamps' side ahead of what could be his final ever game as manager of the French side, with Marcus Thuram still a doubt due to a calf injury. In what could be an issue for Les Blues, defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is a doubt, which could see N'golo Kante come into the side or Kouadio Kone take Tchouameni's position.
For Paraguay, Sunderland defender Omar Alderete is still a doubt after coming off injured against Australia and missing the Germany game, so La Albirroja will be hoping he can make an abrupt return to his nation. Apart from that, there is nothing else for the Paraguay fans to worry about, and the team will remain mainly unchanged.
Key Battles
Kylian Mbappe vs Gustavo Gomez
Mbappe has yet to be stopped by a defence, and the role will mainly fall to Gomez to try and stop him, which he will need to do if Paraguay have a chance of getting to the final eight.
Diego Gomez vs Lucas Digne
The Brighton man will need to be on top form if he is to cause the French back line any danger, but Gomez does have the ability to make something magical happen.
Prediction
France 4-0 Paraguay
It would be great to see Paraguay cause another monumental upset, that would really go down in World Cup folklore, but currently, I don't see any team causing this French side many issues.
Any attack with Mbappe, Olise, Dembele and the rest of their incredible attack is going to make things happen, and if France gets an early goal, it could be a long game for La Albirroja
