Gonçalo Ramos came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Portugal edged Croatia 2-1 and booked a blockbuster FIFA World Cup Round of 16 meeting with Spain.
Portugal survived one of the most dramatic finishes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to defeat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto, with substitute Gonçalo Ramos heading a stoppage-time winner before a late Croatian equaliser was overturned by VAR to send Roberto Martínez's side into the Round of 16.
After a tense, tactical contest that looked destined for extra time, Cristiano Ronaldo's landmark penalty and Ramos' decisive intervention ensured Portugal's World Cup dream remained alive. Croatia believed they had forced an additional 30 minutes when Joško Gvardiol bundled home in the dying seconds, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review.
Portugal will now meet fierce Iberian rivals Spain in one of the standout ties of the Round of 16, while Croatia's remarkable World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end.

Rafael Leão, making his first start of the tournament, immediately stretched Croatia's defence with his pace down the left, creating Bruno Fernandes' early chance that required an excellent double save from Dominik Livaković inside five minutes.
Renato Veiga then headed over from a corner before Cristiano Ronaldo saw another trademark free-kick crash harmlessly into the defensive wall.
Roberto Martínez's side monopolised possession, completing well over twice as many passes as Croatia and pinning Zlatko Dalić's men deep inside their own half. João Cancelo, Nuno Mendes and Pedro Neto continually overloaded the flanks, but Croatia's disciplined defensive block refused to buckle.
Croatia offered only sporadic moments on the counter, with Ivan Perišić testing Diogo Costa early and Martin Baturina briefly threatening on the break, but Ante Budimir remained isolated as Portugal's centre-backs comfortably controlled the match.
Despite nine first-half attempts and six corners, Portugal reached the interval frustrated by a goalless scoreline.

Dalić introduced Igor Matanović at half-time to inject more energy into Croatia's attack, and the substitute's movement immediately unsettled Portugal's defence.
Mateo Kovačić forced an excellent save from Costa before Croatia stunned the favourites in the 55th minute.
João Cancelo was caught out of position as a cross drifted to the far post, where Perišić calmly controlled the ball before firing low beyond Costa to hand Croatia a surprise lead.
Suddenly the game opened up.
Matanović thought he had doubled Croatia's advantage moments later before being flagged offside, while Leão struck the post at the opposite end after rounding Livaković.
Ronaldo then appeared to have equalised with a superb chipped finish, only for another offside flag to deny the Portugal captain his first World Cup knockout goal.

After VAR instructed the referee to review Nikola Vlašić's foul on Renato Veiga inside the penalty area, the spot-kick was awarded.
Ronaldo stepped forward amid enormous pressure and confidently blasted his penalty straight down the middle in the 68th minute.
The goal carried additional significance, becoming the 41-year-old's first ever World Cup knockout-stage goal and moving him onto 11 World Cup goals overall, placing him alongside Jürgen Klinsmann and Sándor Kocsis among the tournament's all-time leading scorers.

Kovačić almost restored the lead with two spectacular efforts that forced outstanding saves from Costa, while substitute Mario Pašalić headed narrowly wide as the game swung from end to end.
Martínez made the boldest decision of the night in the 82nd minute by withdrawing Ronaldo for Gonçalo Ramos.
It proved inspired.
Deep into stoppage time, Leão delivered another dangerous cross from the left and Ramos rose between two defenders to thunder a header beyond Livaković, sparking wild celebrations inside BMO Field.

Croatian celebrations were cut short, however, as VAR identified a slight touch from Igor Matanović on the way through to Gvardiol, placing the defender in an offside position before the final finish.
The goal was ruled out, confirming Portugal's place in the last 16 after one final dramatic intervention.
Portugal's resilience was tested far more severely than their dominance for long spells suggested, but Martínez's substitutions ultimately made the difference. Ramos' winner capped an outstanding impact from the bench and rewarded Portugal's persistence after creating the overwhelming majority of chances throughout the evening.

For Croatia, another spirited World Cup campaign ends in agonising fashion. Dalić's experienced side once again showed the resilience that has defined recent tournaments and came within seconds of forcing extra time before VAR delivered the cruellest of conclusions. Luka Modrić and his teammates depart knowing they pushed one of Europe's strongest squads to the very limit, but Portugal's quality and persistence finally proved decisive.
