Mikel Oyarzabal’s clinical brace ended a 14-year knockout drought, propelling dominant La Roja into the bracket as they maintain their formidable defensive record on the world stage.
Spain are through to the Round of 16 after a comfortable 3-0 win over Austria. Mikel Oyarzabal scored two of the goals, taking his tally for the tournament up to four, and Pedro Porro got the other. Tonight's victory marks Spain's first World Cup knockout win since 2010.
Austria caused them very few problems but their style of play allowed for an open game. Das Team created some chances of their own but struggled to keep possession, only having 36% of the ball.
The opening quarter of the match before the first hydration break was quite even but Spain had created the better opportunities to score. Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager was outstanding in the first half and did well to stop his side going into the break three or four goals down.
Spain looked to have taken the lead in the 29th minute through Marc Cucurella but the referee immediately blew his whistle for a foul. A foul on Schlager by Pau Cubarsi from a corner was given, even after a short VAR check, despite a lack of clear contact from the Barcelona man. However, this only boosted Spain's confidence.
The momentum continued to build for Spain and they finally found the breakthrough in the 36th minute. Pedri cleverly found Cucurella on the left-hand side, who put a fantastic low cross into the box to find Oyarzabal. Spain's striker then calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to give his country a well-deserved lead.
Schlager made more vital saves before the half came to a close and the Austrians went into the break just the one goal behind. But, Spain started the second half just as they left off.
Ralf Rangnick made two changes at the break, introducing Carney Chukwuemeka and Florian Grillitsch, but he could not change their fortunes. Spain continued to dominate and Austria looked to run out of steam during the second half.
La Roja began to show their quality with a number of impressive passages of play and they doubled their advantage in the 66th minute. Cucurella laid the ball off to Alex Baena on the left-wing, who beat his man and put an inviting cross into the box. The ball was met by Tottenham Hotspur's Pedro Porro who headed home Spain's second with his first international goal.
For the rest of the match, it was all Spain. Lamine Yamal had a great chance to score at the tournament for the second time, but his effort was cleared off the line by David Alaba. The Spaniards then got their third goal in the 89th minute through a second Oyarzabal strike. Cucurella impressively found the Real Sociedad man in space and he once again slotted it past Schlager with excellent composure.
This saw the end to Austria's 2026 World Cup campaign as Spain booked their place in the next round. The performance was outstanding from Spain and they now are beginning to look like one of the most dangerous sides at the tournament.
Spain keep another clean sheet
[REUTERS]Although Spain's attacking threat is outstanding, they are still yet to concede at this summer's tournament. Their defensive play has been brilliant with Luis de la Fuente adopting a high-line approach.
The back four ahead of Unai Simon has usually stayed the same with Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte partnering each other at centre-back. Marc Cucurella has played every match at left-back and either one of Marcos Llorente or Pedro Porro have been deployed as the right-back.
Cubarsi and Laporte have been outstanding with their immense ball-playing capabilities but their defensive stability has given the side a solid platform to play. Pedri and Rodri give them lots of composure in the middle, making it hard for teams to win the ball back. Today, Austria struggled to create many real chances, only creating one big chance which was headed over the bar by Sasa Kalajdzic.
Lamine Yamal is the standout player in this side, as he would be for any team, and he was their main creative spark despite Austria's efforts to double up on him. Oyarzabal got on the scoresheet twice to take his tally up to four for the tournament so far, making it 17 goals in his last 16 starts for the national team.
What comes next for Spain?
[REUTERS]Confidence is now flowing for the Spaniards as they advance through to the last 16. Their next opponents will be confirmed later tonight as Portugal face Croatia. La Roja will take on the winners of that match and will undoubtedly be the favourites after their performance today.
Their potential road to the final looks interesting, with it likely to be Portugal next, then the United States in the quarter-finals. After that, their most likely opponent in the semi-final would be France, who look like they have leapfrogged them to being most people's favourites.
Whatever comes next, Spain have hit form at the right time. Tonight's clash between Portugal and Croatia will be closely watched in the Spanish camp and their performance today will send a big warning to both sides who will have the European champions in the back of their minds.
