Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon wants A'ja Wilson taking more shots from the perimeter.
Hammon made the comment after Wilson scored 45 points in a 101-94 win over the Connecticut Sun on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena. Wilson shot 15-of-18 from the field, made both of her three-point attempts, and went 13-of-13 from the foul line.
Hammon was asked why she wants the reigning WNBA MVP shooting more from outside.
"We always want the best player on the planet to shoot more. She spent a little time out in training camp with a couple bumps and bruises, so I think really now she's just trying to get her rhythm back, get her legs back underneath her. This game she clearly did," Hammon said.
Wilson is the only four-time MVP in WNBA history. In 2025, she became the only WNBA or NBA player to win a scoring title, a championship, Finals MVP, regular-season MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
The three-point shot is a more recent addition to Wilson's game. She did not attempt a three-pointer during her first MVP season in 2020. Last season, she shot a career-high 42.4% from three, making 25 of 59 attempts.
Wilson hit a three-pointer late in the win over the Sun and said the shot was not a designed play. She said Connecticut's Raegan Beers was giving her space on the possession.
"My teammates trust me in that situation, and it's definitely something that I'm gonna continue to add to my game. Obviously Becky wants me to shoot more, so I just gotta continue to get comfortable with it. If it's there, I'm gonna knock it down and we go from there," Wilson said.
Wilson said she was more patient getting to her spots and made a point of using her right hand, an approach she felt she rushed in the team's previous game.
Hammon had said before the game that she has not fully opened up the playbook for Wilson this season. Wilson said she does not track her shot volume.
"I don't really pay too much attention to my usage because the ball gonna find the person that it needs to find regardless. If we stacking wins, I'm really not even worried about it too much. I just be chilling. I trust Becky with the clipboard, piece of paper, napkin, whatever. I trust her with it," Wilson said.
Las Vegas, which swept the Phoenix Mercury for the 2025 WNBA title, improved to 3-1 with the win over the Sun.
