LeBron James is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers in what appears to be the final chapter of his NBA career.
NBA icon LeBron James has chosen his next (and seemingly final) destination in the league: the Philadelphia 76ers.
There were a number of other teams in the mix for James' services, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors. Philly was considered by many to be a long shot to win the James sweepstakes. But after weeks of waiting on a decision from the NBA's all-time leading scorer, the 76ers got the news they were hoping for.
Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon addressed the news on Friday and said she was surprised.
"I was surprised," she said. "Didn't see Philly on the radar, but they're gonna have a squad. I mean, they got the young and the old and everything in between. So, obviously, LeBron has won a lot. Be interesting, if they win the championship, somebody to win that many championships with that many different franchises, maybe Robert Horry? I mean, but being a centerpiece like he has been his entire career, he's just about the right things, about winning, so obviously, he saw something there that he felt like, 'Ooh, I can win with this.'"
James' deal with the Sixers is reportedly for two years and worth roughly $8 million, with the second season being a player option. The contract represents a stark difference from the more than $50 million James made last season alone. This offseason, the choice was simply about picking the right situation rather than landing the biggest deal.
In a thread on X, James called this his "last decision" and said he believes he can "help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team."
His decision creates a loaded potential starting lineup for the Sixers, who already landed star wing Jaylen Brown earlier this offseason. They could now roll with a starting five of James, Brown, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and Joel Embiid.
Philadelphia will certainly be a major threat to come out of the Eastern Conference if all goes to plan, which certainly contributed to James' choice. The 41-year-old is clearly still trying to add to his collection of rings, which already includes championships with the Heat, Cavs and Los Angeles Lakers.
A championship with the 76ers would give James his fifth NBA title overall, and Philly would become the fourth team he'd have won a ring with. No player in NBA history has ever won a title with four different teams.
But there is still work to do. NBA fans have seen time and time again that loaded rosters don't always equate to success, as fit and chemistry are factors that can't be overlooked. Some players on the Sixers will have to sacrifice, but that's a worthy price to pay to try to win a title.
James himself showed a willingness to take on a smaller role when needed this past season, which resulted in him equaling a career-low in points per game. But he was still very productive, as he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per contest.
Now, he'll get a chance to make it work with a brand new team in what appears to be the final chapter of his career.
