Brittney Griner is joining the Connecticut Sun on a one-year deal after one season with the Atlanta Dream, where she climbed to second all-time in WNBA blocks.
The Connecticut Sun announced Friday that Brittney Griner has signed with the franchise. She is joining the franchise on a one-year contract.
Griner, 33, averaged 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in 39 games with the Atlanta Dream last season. Two career milestones also occurred in 2025 for Griner as she reached 859 all-time blocks, moving into second place in league history, and 2,525 career rebounds, good for 16th all-time.
"We are beyond thrilled to welcome BG to our team," Sun general manager Morgan Tuck said. "Brittney is and has been one of the most impactful players in our game throughout her legendary career. Her leadership, resilience, and the way she connects with her teammates and fans bring immeasurable value to our franchise. From our first conversations, it was clear she believes in our vision, and we're fully committed to supporting hers as well."
Griner joined the Dream last season after 11 years in Phoenix, where the Mercury drafted her with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft. She ended her Phoenix tenure with nine All-Star appearances, three All-WNBA First Team selections, and as a two-time Defensive Player of the Year. She also won the 2014 championship and led the league in rebounding four times and scoring twice.
Playing overseas, Griner added four EuroLeague Championships and three Russian League titles to her collection. She represented the United States at three Olympics, taking home gold each time in 2016, 2021, and 2024, and won two FIBA World Cup titles. Only nine other players in women's basketball history have won three or more Olympic gold medals, and only Lisa Leslie also scored 30 points in an Olympic game while suiting up for the national team.
Griner's college career at Baylor was historic in its own right. No player in NCAA history — men's or women's — has blocked more shots than her 748. She also won a national championship in 2012 and took home back-to-back AP Player of the Year awards in 2012 and 2013.
Connecticut and Griner open the 2026 season May 10 against the Seattle Storm at Mohegan Sun Arena.
