Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson have earned WNBA Player of the Month honors in their respective conferences for June.
Clark, taking home the honor on the Eastern Conference side, had a productive June, averaging 21.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field and 35.1 percent from beyond the arc in 10 appearances.
Wilson, meanwhile, averaged a 26-point double-double during the month of June. She went for 26.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per contest while shooting 52.6 percent from the field and 31.0 percent from deep. She appeared in 11 games.
Both players are having strong seasons overall, not just last month. Clark, in her third year at the WNBA level, is having a career year in many ways, and she has helped the Fever to an 11-8 record so far. She is on her way to her third All-Star Game in as many seasons in the WNBA behind averages of 21.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game.
Wilson, for her part, is having another MVP-caliber season. Already a four-time league MVP, she is showing no signs of slowing down, averaging 25.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game this season while having one of the most efficient shooting years of her career. Her Aces are 15-5, which is tied for the best mark in the league.
Unfortunately, Clark and Wilson are both nursing injuries right now, though neither ailment appears to be too serious. With any luck, the two stars will be back in action sooner rather than later, but it doesn't appear that both will be back when their teams play each other this weekend (Sunday).
Wilson could be available for that game, but Clark is targeting a later return.
It would be no surprise to see these two stars earn more Player of the Month nods during the remainder of the season, but they also likely have bigger goals in mind.
The Aces are trying to win their fourth title in a five-season span, and Wilson is going to have to be a major force behind that mission if they're going to achieve it.
As for Clark, her squad is looking to build on its playoff run from last season with the goal of ultimately reaching and winning the WNBA Finals.
The WNBA season is approaching its midway point. There is still lots of basketball left.
