Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 for a record 16th straight 20-point game and Caitlin Clark had 26 and 11 assists in Indiana's 90-86 win.
Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 points for her 16th consecutive game with at least 20, a single-season WNBA record, and the Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky 90-86 on Saturday afternoon in Chicago.
Mitchell shot 11-of-22 from the floor with 3 3-pointers and broke a tie with A'ja Wilson, who put together a 15-game run. The overall record is 20 straight, also by Wilson, spanning two seasons. Mitchell has scored in double figures in 47 consecutive games, tied with Arike Ogunbowale for the 14th-longest streak in league history. Her 27 points moved her to 5,588 for her career, past DeLisha Milton-Jones and into 24th on the all-time list.
Sky coach Tyler Marsh said it is hard to completely shut down two players as good as Caitlin Clark and Mitchell.
"Yes. Someone asked me about Aliyah Boston pregame, and I said, 'Pick one.' And I'm gonna give you the same answer for Kelsey as well," Marsh said.
"Her downhill speed is second to none in this league. Her shot creation, second to none in this league. From a skill standpoint, from an athleticism standpoint, it's just constant pressure. You have no second to relax throughout a possession, and that's where it starts and ends with her.
"Off ball, she finds ways to score. She attacks mismatches when she has them. And then she's obviously lethal with the ball in her hands. And so, in a weird way, I think she's still underrated for what she's able to do and what she brings nightly. But she helps make them who they are."
DiJonai Carrington was ejected in the first quarter after a Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham. Carrington had 8 points on 3-of-3 shooting before the ejection. She posted the words "WHITE PRIVILEGE" on social media from the locker room minutes later.
Marsh said Carrington gave Chicago good energy in the minutes she was on the floor.
"In the moment, I thought that she made a play on the ball. I didn't think it warranted a flagrant two. I didn't see the replay when it happened. So that was my initial thoughts," Marsh said.
"And what the officials made, what they made—I haven't looked at that play since, so I really don't know if it was justified or not. But that's what I thought in the moment."
Fever coach Stephanie White said Indiana has been a resilient group that at times makes things harder on itself than it needs to be.
"Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul," White said. "I don't think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen, and I thought it was the right call.
"One of the things about Nai is that she's gonna play her butt off, man. She's gonna compete. Nobody's gonna go walking in for a layup. And so I don't oppose the hard foul. But I also don't think that she intentionally went for the neck."
Makayla Timpson said she grabbed Cunningham after the foul to protect her teammate. Timpson made her first start of the game in place of Indiana's usual lineup and finished with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. The 3 assists were a career high, surpassing the 2 she had on June 17 against Seattle.
"Just being confident in myself, believing in myself, always staying ready so I don't have to get ready, and the coaches trust me and my teammates trust me out on the court," Timpson explained. "So just be who I am—be nothing more or less than who I am."
The league rescinded a technical foul Clark received during the game for contact with an official. Had it stood, it would have been her eighth of the season and would have carried a one-game suspension. White said after the game that the technical had already been appealed. White also received a technical.
Clark finished with 26 points on 7-of-15 shooting, 5-of-6 from 3-point range, 11 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 turnovers. She went 7-of-10 at the free throw line. It was her eighth career game with at least 25 points, 10 assists, and 5 3-pointers, a line the rest of the league has produced four times combined. The double-double was her 26th career game with at least 10 points and 10 assists and her ninth this season. Clark's 1,589 career points moved her past Shavonte Zellous into 10th in franchise history.
Clark said she recentered herself after the technical by telling herself to go win the game.
"Yeah. I mean, that's what I always want to be able to do, is set my teammates up for success. And then also, when I'm given an opportunity to score, take the easy ones," Clark said. "Thought I was really selective from the three-point line and got some easy looks, which was helpful.
"But obviously, I could take care of the ball a little bit better. If I cut the turnovers in half, who knows how many points that is for our team, whether it's an assist for me or whether I'm able to score. So I think I just did a good job reading the defense and taking what they gave me. Probably could've done a little bit better job about specific matchups and certain things we wanted.
"I think sometimes I got so focused on just getting downhill, getting downhill, especially with their five players. We knew we could put them in ball screen action, attack their feet, that that was sometimes my only goal. So just continuing to watch film and work on that. But obviously, Kelsey makes it pretty easy to get a lot of assists, and it's nice to play alongside her."
Indiana opened on an 8-0 run and trailed 23-22 after the first quarter. Mitchell scored eight straight points and Clark hit a 3-pointer during a 13-0 second-quarter run that turned a tie into a 46-33 lead, and the Fever went to the break up 53-42. Chicago outscored Indiana 20-18 in the third to make it 71-62 with a quarter to play.
Clark said Indiana came out well in the fourth, forced a Chicago timeout, and let the lead shrink from there.
"Yeah, I mean, I think it was a very physical game, and I know I shot 10 free throws, but I felt like I could've got to the line a little bit more even," Clark explained.
"And I think just continuing to play under control, under control. I think at times tonight I was still a little sped up, a little fast, and I have been doing a lot better at that. And there were moments where I was still good in this game, but, like, get into their body, use their physicality against them.
"Just still continuing to improve in that way and make it easier for me to finish around the rim. Obviously, I didn't finish great around the rim tonight, so can improve in that way for sure."
Jacy Sheldon hit a 3-pointer to pull Chicago within 89-86 with 28 seconds left. Clark made the second of two free throws 10 seconds later for the final margin.
Sheldon said Chicago never thinks it is out of a game and fights to the end no matter the score.
"We got really good looks toward the end. We played really great defense too," Sheldon said. "I think we came up a little short. I think I fouled at the end when I probably shouldn't have. But we executed really well at the end.
"They also played great defense at the end there when we were trying to force their shots, and yeah, we came up short at the end on that one."
Natasha Cloud and Rachel Banham each scored 17 for Chicago. Banham shot 6-of-11 with 3 3-pointers and added 3 assists and 2 steals. Kamilla Cardoso had 14 points and 9 rebounds. Azurá Stevens returned to the lineup and went 3-of-13. Sydney Taylor did not play.
Chicago's bench outscored Indiana's 35-9. The Fever shot 51.5% from the floor and scored 46 points in the paint to 38 for the Sky, and 11 on the fast break to 9. Chicago finished with 25 assists to 23 and 10 steals to 8. Indiana blocked 7 shots to 2.
Boston added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 11 rebounds for the 50th double-double of her career and her ninth this season.
Chicago beat the Los Angeles Sparks 95-88 on Aug. 5, the fourth game since Carrington returned from a foot injury.
Clark and Mitchell scored 513 points over a 10-game span, a league record for a duo. It was their eighth game with each scoring at least 25, tied for the second-most by a duo in league history.
Las Vegas erased a 20-point deficit to beat Indiana 86-84 earlier in the week. The Fever are 20-12 and first in the Eastern Conference. Chicago is 12-20.
Indiana hosts the New York Liberty on Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Chicago plays at the Seattle Storm on Monday.
